Reflexology & IVF
Question:

I have a client who is about to start IVF treatment after a failed attempt at IUI. She is finding the treatments very relaxing and as far as I believe this is the main purpose of Reflex during IVF treatment, as we shouldn't be trying to normalise the hormone levels when drugs are trying to do the opposite. I know that some people treat all the way through to implantion while others stop as soon as IVF starts or stop at a particular stage during the treatment. What are others thought on this? If you do treat thoughout the IVF, do you alter your treatment? ie, avoid the endocrine system? But then again the endo glands are so important for inducing relaxation and dealing with emotional issues. Can anyone help??!

Hi Sarah
I've worked with clients who have been on the waiting list for IVF - my advice would be to stop treatments when your client starts IVF. The reason being, that the IVF will UN-balance your clients hormone levels, and you will then be working contra to the treatment she is recieving.
While your client is waiting for treatment - try stimulating the ovary, fallopean and uterus reflexes - one of my client fell pregnant before going for IVF!

having done the maternity reflexology training with suzanne enzer, it does seem to be a personal decision on whether to treat and indeed, if the client still wishes treatment.
the only thing i would say, is that suzanne said she never did treat women receiving IVF treatment and she's been at it for years. it is a tricky time and what we have to remember is that the IVF drugs are trying to produce more eggs than is normal and we are trying to balance/ normalise the hormone system, so there could be a clash.
i was actually quite surprised at how different the maternity treatment is to a regular treatment and i include many parts into the regular treatment now, like the endocrine balance.

Thank you for noth of your replies and yes, I know think it's wise to stop reflex treatments as soon as IVF starts. However I know that my client benefits from the relaxation benefits and I would hate to *abandon* her now when she's at her most stressed. I was talking to a reflex colleague this morning and she also has a client about to start IVF and she is going to offer 1/2 hour foot massage treatments to her right through her IVF and the first 12 weeks of pregnancy if required. How does this sound? I like the idea of still be able to offer my client a benefical treatment for relaxation with out the risks involved.
