Question:

I am planning to convert one of my rooms in my house to a massage clinic.
Do i need to get planning permision or any licenses for that?
Can i put a lighted sign board in front of my house ?
Can i distribute marketing leaflets saying about the massage service?

Hi nitsWelcome to the forum, as general rule there is a distinction between working from home and working at home.If you are working from home then you don't need planning permission, I am not sure about the lighted sign board though, signs that are attached to the property usually need planning permission but I am sure there are ways around it.I think in London you need a licence from the council but not sure about anywhere else, I am sure someone else will fill you in on any other areas that require it.You should not have a problem with leafleting, though be careful how you word it or you will end up with a lot of nonsense calls :-)

Thanks Paul
but do you know or anyone out there in the forum knows someone who has taken the special treatment licenses for setting up a massage clinic at home.. the licence seems to be a real head ache after going through their application forms. what i though was, it will be better to be a member in a organisation than going after the license..
what do you think

Hi, the best way to approach this is to go to your local authority/council, they will be the best to advice you, but a licence nornally costs approx 100-200 pounds a year, you must tell them what sort of 'massage' your doing, as if you were applying in certain parts of 'london' they would ask you to pay 3-4 thousand pounds, i came across this when i was finding out for my business exams, and i can't remember who was embarrassed more, me or the guy on the phone !!!!!!!!!!
for an added note, you are not legally required to have a licence if you are a mobile therapist, but this will soon change within the next couple of years.
