Question:
Hi all,
earlier this evening I watched the tv show "It's me or the dog" & on it they had a Reiki Master to help calm the dog down. The thing that annoyed me is that they described Reiki as a "japanese healing massage". I thought maybe the information thecommentator had could just be ill-informed but the Reiki Master was actually massaging the dog.
I know that Reiki & massage can go well together but explaining Reiki as a massaging system is just wrong.
Is there something I am missing here? Is there a different form of Reiki that *is* massage? or do you think maybe they explained it as that to make the more sceptical people more open minded about Reiki?
It did annoy me so I just had to vent lol

Your reaction was the same as mine! Except my partner had his ear bent with my ravings for at least half an hour... I also had the same wonderings - is there massage involved that I haven't been told about? Maybe it is at Master level so I haven't learnt it yet? How can we ever teach Joe Public about what we do if it is misrepresented???
Feel better now....

I agree. I haven't heard of a form of Reiki involving massage. It does make it difficult for people to understand what Reiki is. Perhaps they should have explained that he'd mixed Reiki and massage together. That might have been better.
I'm a RM & I've never heard of Reiki being massage or it having anything to do with it. I thought maybe the show had simply got it wrong but the RM on there seemed to go along with what they said - wonder where she got her training??[sm=confused-smiley-012.gif]

In the USA the big Massage Associations have done their best adopt Reiki, There are even questions about Reiki which only a person trained in Reiki would know on the National Massage exam. Being a massage therapist I always use energy healing with the Massage. Most Massage therapist who are also trained in Reiki probably do the same, thus there is a huge cross over. I also recommend to many students who wish to have a
Natural Healing Practice to take a massage Certification course, then they can legally touch a person, for healing. There are other ways to do this as well. Legally it is safer to say they are connected in some areas, it may be why the Reiki practioner did not say anything.

Unfortunately, SS, there is a fairly widespread notion that Reiki is a type of massage and of course, ill-informed or didn't-do-their-research television presenters don't help. I could give you a link to the makers of the programme, but since the one you saw was a repeat anyway, it's unlikely they'd pay too much attention IMO [&o]
As a dog person, I used to shout at my TV during Crufts week, when the Beeb had an ex-newsreader doing the commentary and coming out with all manner of nonsense. Thankfully the more recent ones have been rather better and more accurate.
Sorry, I digress, but here's one I've been saving for a quiet moment, discovered while googling to see just WHAT was out there about Reiki massage. Quite a few sites, it seems. Including this one, though the two are separate treatments here:
Presumably if using a couch with a face hole, the Reiki would whistle through the hole and hit the floor with a thud? ;)
More seriously ... Thanks to Patrick for the explanation. I have received Reflexology treatments from a friend who also has Reiki, and the best massages ever from someone who isa spiritual healer, and as I recall there was also some osteopathy for good measure. Wonderful!

LOL Guys,
You've got me thinking about mass distance healing to my Mum and Dads house where they reside with 7 Tibetan Spaniels !!!! Yes I did say 7 ~ there were 11 at one point. Peace and tranquillity (and no barking) could very well be coming to their house.

It seems to me that I did read in one of my manuals that Reiki was done with the recipient striped to the waist for the half and full blood exchange technique, so yes in a sensethere was a form of massage employed but it was only for a part of the treatment.I think one of the problems with a lot of these techniquesis trying to decide when these techniques where actually brought into play and if they where actually used by Usui or if the 'officers club' put them together after the war! and then which system do they really belong to?
I haven't ever done the blood exchange technique with the person stipped to the waist - I can see why someone would do that (less friction) but it seems to work ok with clothes on. In my manuals it never suggested the recpient should not be clothed for this, so I've never known any different. Just thought I'd say!

A little while ago I had an American man ring me from a local Motel and ask me to come over and give him a Reiki massage. I told him that I was a Healer and not a massage therapist and he was very surprised and said that he had Reiki massages all the time in the States!! I didn't mind him making that mistake but then he rang me 3 more times, the last one at midnight, still demanding I came over to give him a massage!! I got my husband to speak to him then lol.

There was an article in a uk paper around 4 years ago saying that reiki massage was the next big thing.
reiki is not massage however as expained there are certain methods like blood exchage, there is also methods like pushing, pulsing, vibrating of the hand etc... which a novice could misunderstand as massage.
at least it gets reiki noticed however reiki is not massage but blends well as a treatment together.

Hi SS,
Although it's a request for case studies so much will be done by PM, I just thought I'd mention there's a new thread on canine massage in the Pets forum:
