Holistic Facial v Beauty Facial
Question:

I've trained in holistic facials which involves double cleanse, tone, aromatherapy oil facial massage and moisturise. We were also encouraged to use crystals and guided meditation.
Wheras beauty facialsinvolve double cleanse, tone, exfoliate, mask, facial massage and moisturise.
Firstly, what do you think makes a holistic facial?
Secondly, for all those out there that have trained intensively in facials as part of your NVQ2 and 3 training, what do you think of the influx of people offering Holisitic facials?
Thirdly, is there a different opinion/difference to holistic and beauty to clients?
I suppose am just curious to what people think are the differences or not.
Also, sometimes I feel that I have to almost apologise to clients when they book a holistic facial as some of them expect it to involve exfoliation and mask, but, are pleased with the end results as I include reiki as well as blending my own oils, and use crystals.
Look forward to your remarks.

Hi Daisy,
I'm trained to provide traditional beauty-style facials, andwhilst these are greatI'vealways felt I wanted to offer something a bit more. With this in mind,I'mjust about to take on a new face range and embark on training in "holistic" aromatherapy facials, whichincorporate gemstones and guided relaxation as part of the treatment.
Personally, I see holistic facials as having more of a "spiritual" or "whole person" approach to skincare - i.e. the notion that beauty comes from within, and aiming to treat and balance the body as a whole in order to impact on the client's skin and health (rather than just focusing on treating the skin itself).
I'm certainly not saying that the facials we deliver as beauty therapists ignore the wider picture, but in my experience the more "holistic" aspectssuch asvisualisation, colour therapy, aromatherapy, etc, seem to be add-ons rather than the focus of the treatment... if that makes sense??
Plus, of course, a truly holistic facial is something a little bit different and is a great selling point for your customers!

Andy sums it up beautifully.
All the moves are designed to awaken the healing process as well as the mainstream job of cleansing, toning and moisturising. I don't see anything wrong in adding an exfoliation and mask to an holistic treatment. Exfoliation doesn't have to feel like a brillo pad is being applied to face, they can be fabulously soft and smooth. And masks can be very holistic if natural products are used.
Daisy, there is no reason not to introduce exfoliators and masks if you want to in holistic facials. In my view, they are getting more than just a beauty facial!:)

i think a conbination of both is lovely as they both have their different effects!
incroporating holistic and beauty in one treatment can be very easy as lotusflower said, there are some lovely creamy exfoliators (look up mary chor lilly essence) and the client will get a facial with psychological and physical benefits, as andy said balancing body as a whole .............. clients will deffinatly be back for more!

We have trained in holistic facials as part of our holistic therapies course and for this we do
cleanse
exfoliate
skin analysis using magnifyer lamp
choice of mask
20 min face neck and shoulder massage using essential oils
Its a really nice treatment to have and the clients we have at college seem to like it. Then again, I have also had the facial electrical treatment as a client in another class and loved that too! Its great when your skin glows and feels so soft afterwards and its nice to feel pampered.

thanks for the replies everyone. I think you've all put my mind at rest and I should just enjoy what I'm doing. I like to be shown how to do things and a beauty therapist friend has offered to demo exfoliate and mask for me, which I may take up in the future.
the last holistic facial I did, I mixed a little lip balm with exfoliator and did a lip exfoliation, so its about adding little things.
