Question:
well the inevitable has happened.......LSSM and SMA have parted company
Hi Richard
Can you give us more details? For some months now the LSSM has been advising its students and graduates to join ISRM rather than SMA. But as far as I am aware, SMA is still accepting LSSM graduates as members (they renewed my membership and insurance less than three months ago)

Hi Alan, I know as much as you at this stage. I did expect it, but cant understand why LSSM state that its graduates cant join SMA if they do a course with them, as it states on the LSSM website?
Hi Richard
I agree that LSSM cannot require its graduates to resign from SMA. It is a pity that 'oscargabe' made what seems to be the first reference to the LSSM's announcement on the 'new members' forum rather than on this forum. But as I've mentioned on the other forum, four of the eight members of the current SMA board are LSSM graduates ! I have heard nothing from the SMA to suggest that any of them are being required to resign !
The fact that LSSM wants its graduates to join ISRM doesn't stop such graduates from joining a different professional association if that other professional association accepts their qualification (and the SMA now seem to accept a large number of qualifications). For example, I know of one LSSM graduate who is a member of LCSP. I assume that STO would accept LSSM graduates as members.
Many LSSM graduates have remained with the SMA despite Mel Cash's resignation (ie following Penny Brooke and Stephen Cluney rather than Mel).
My impression is that the statement on the LSSM website is seriously misleading, and may indeed lead to a threat of legal action.

I am quite surprised that such a bold statement is on LSSM website.
As far as I am aware you would be eligible to join organisations such as STO, LSPC etc, so not sure why the remark about not being able to join SMA. I think the person who posted the original post on the forum was concerned, as they had booked onto the LSSM course because they could join SMA.
I can understand the reasons why LSSM have parted company, to an extent, but surely you work best at changing an organisation, if you are an integral part of it?
And, being a cynic, the only reason SMA have allowed 'level 3' graduates to join, is to swell their membership numbers in their attempt to gain HPC regulation.....which is another matter.....
From my limited experience of SMA, (limited due to the fact that they are rubbish at replying to emails and questions), they are probably better off out if it!
For the benefit of any other LSSM graduates who have retained their SMA membership :- I emailed the SMA office after reading Mel Cash’s statement on the LSSM website. The SMA office has confirmed that LSSM graduates will be able to continue their membership with the SMA after their current year’s membership has expired.

I just wanted to ask a quick question - will we be able to use any post nominal letters if we join with either of these bodies?
