Beauty Therapist wannabe
Question:

Hello :D
I'm new to the industry, after several years working in an office and bored of itI'm looking to change careers . I've always been interested in make up, and I'm about to complete a make up course:D after that I'm hoping to study level 2 beauty therapy part time this september, the course is for a year. After completing the course I would like to start working part time to begin with, ideally prefrably from home or renting a room or mobile.I havent considered working in a salon as I feel age could be against me as I'm in my early thirties most of them seem to belooking for at least a years experience as aminimumandalso a Level 3 qualification. Thats why I feel I would be better working from home or renting a room.
I hear renting a room can be expensive, If I was to work from house then I'd like to have a summerhouse inmy garden to work from I will contact my housing officer if this is possibleetc etc. I'm not a confident driverso being mobile is not an option for me at the mo, to be honest I would need lessons.
Basically I would like to hear from therapistespecially those from london who are working from home or renting a room about your experiences and advice cost etc etc
I would like to hear from people who have changed careers to this industry.;)
Ps I'm sorry for going on a bit xx:eek:

Hi Bev,
Never say you are too old. I have worked in an office since I was 19 and only at the ripe old age of 42 did I decide to change careers. I have done level 2 beauty, nail technology and just finishing my facial module. Have also done a separate sugaring course and this makes up the majority of my business at the mo, so if you haven't done waxing yet, get yourselfon a course.
I did some voluntary work in a local salon for 6 months which was great experience and I now only work Monday-Thursday in an office and Friday/Saturday for myself.
I rent a room above a hairdressers in my home town, the landlord has been really supportive and only charges me a minimal rent, and I mean MINIMAL.
My client list has grown in the two months Ihave been there from 3 or 4 to almost 35.
Wouldn't change it for anything in fact would like to give up more days at the office but I need to walk before I can run.
Hope everything works out for you hun, let me know how you go.

Hi,
I'm just finishing my level 2 beauty therapy (3 more lessons and all my assessments will be finished!!), my course was a year long. I have also changed careers quite dramatically as i have always worked in an office, as well as being in the army. This has definately been the best move i have made. I work from home, i have a conservatory that is lovely and light, and have set all my things up in there. If i have a client in and my husband is home, he disappears upstairs (a good excuse for him to go and play games on his computer!!). I also offer evening appointments, but try to keep to only a couple of evenings a week.
I did do one appointment mobile, but to be honest, it wasnt worth my while, by the time i got set up and my wax melted and ipacked away, it was more hassle than anything, so i decided to only work from home. Plus if you do facials, you have all your products at home and you dont have to carry them with you because you dont know what type of skin a new client has, what mask to use etc.
I'm sure you will enjoy the course, thought at the beginning you may think 'oh my god, how involved is this??' there is quite a lot of anatomy and physiology involved, but once you get over that bit, it's not as intense. Are you going to college for 2 days a week? If there's anything i can help with, feel free to ask and i'll try.
Best of luck
jo xx

Don't be discouraged because of your age. I am thirty and am sitting for myCIBTAC (Diploma in Beauty Therapy) exams next week. Although I am doing the course part-time, most of my collegues are in their teens.
The course is a bit demanding. I used to have twice a week lessons from 17:30 till 20:30 and sometimes even later, after an 8:00 - 16:00 job in an office besides having a husband and a house. We do cover a lot of anatomy and physiology but the subject is very interesting, so if you are interested go for it.

Hi Jo
Thanks for the reply. I was considering goling to a college which offer the Itec level 2 beauty course on a Saturday from about 9 -4, but I've now decided to go to a private beauty college it’s a few hundred pounds more than I would have to pay for at a local college, I've chosen this route because its intensive in a short spce of time and its more practical and also there are holistic therapy courses included. Ive checked them out and they are approved by BABTAC. To begin I wasn't keen on intensive course because I felt they may be slightly inferior. I contacted BABTAC about the Essex college of Beauty and they are approved by them.
Its nice that you can work from home, I've been a little confused about which avenue to take either working from home, mobile or renting. For me working from would be ideal if I can get approval from the housing etc etc. I'll have a better idea nearer the time I finish the course.
Can you give me an idea roughly how much it cost for supplies. equipment etc
bye for now
