Good carbs
Question:

Hi there,
Just joined HP and this is my first posting so be gentle :)
My question to the community is - which carbs are good? I read that anything with white flour (white rice, flour, tortillasetc.) are not so good for the digestive system and cause wind, and suprisinglywhole wheat bread also causes wind.
Can you give me an indication of what carbs are safe to eat and minimise wind?
Much appreciate your advice.

Hiya nk!
I dont know about minimising wind but to my knowledge 'bad carbs' are simple carbohydrates which are white. 'Good carbs' are complex carbohydrates which as you said are of the wholemeal variety. Bad ones raise the blood sugar level at a quicker rate and then make them plummet whilst complex carbs release energy at a slower, constant rate keeping you with a more stable supply of energy and feeling satisfied (hunger wise) for a longer period.
I think this is correct but Im sure someone will step in if Im totally off!
But as for the wind element of your question, Im afraid I cant help-sorry!

Well, from someone who has no official qualifications in nutrition, i'd say unprocessed complex carbs are also good. better for energy levels, too.

Hi NK,
The previous posts are perfectly correct, the bottom line is that most things that go thru' the refining process "ie white breads ,flour, ready meals and particularly white sugar, have so many additions for changing the "shelf life or taste" that they should be regarded as "empty calories" that is basically that the body derives little or no nutritional value from them.
Whole grain breads and cereals and natural sugars ie fructose, lactose etc have more "complex carbs" and as stated in prev' post they are in fact slower release when stored in muscles as glycogen polymers as opposed to single glycogen units.
This I am afraid is quite a simplistic approach to this subject which is meant a a generalisation for those who may find it difficult to understand the science behind the issue.
The rule of thumb is to try to eat food in its most natural state, primaily before any processing takes place, but certainly before any bleaching takes place, incidently those who suffer from flatulence may like to try to cut out white bread, you will be suprised at the difference.
Also some "organic" food that you can buy in ready meal format is nutritionally inferior to non organic ,so i would encourage you all to bite the bullet and start cooking yourselves, and dont over cook food as this has a negative effect on its nutritional value.
