daily kcals
Question:

Hi,
Does anyone know if 1600 kcals a day is enough of a reduction to lose weight? I would have thought 1000 is too little.
Also, how much fat is a healthy daily allowance?
I would like to lose about 20 kgs over the next couple of months, and am finding writing a daily food diary helpful, but want to be sure I am eating enough and not starving myself.
Thanks...Kathryn

I'm no expert in this but....
The amount of calories you need to eat depends on how much weight you have to lose. From what you have said you want to lose alot of weight and I would say you still need to eat at least 1600 calories a day otherwise you will lose it too fast and put yourself at risk.
Also i found paul mckennas i can make slim book and cd very helpful.

Not sure - try having a look at this website:
If you sign up for a 3 day free trial (you don't need to give a credit card or anything) you can get a run down of how many kcals YOU should eat, depending on how quickly you want to lose weight.
Worth a look?

Hi all, in rough calculations 3500kcals deficit equates to one pound fat loss, however there are more things you should consider before trying to loose weight simply by not consuming calories, it depends which calories you are leaving out as to how efficient your metabolism will continue to work.
You should seek expert advice from either a nutritionalist or personal trainer .
I suspect that your immediate weight loss may be fluid based and therefore non sustainable, you should try to increase muscle mass to tone up at the same time, therefore requiring more "fuel to work your body.
Exercise combined with healthy eating is the way forward and a little weight loss often is far better than yo-yo dieting

Hi,
I would say 1600 is probably fine for losing weight...it sounds sensible and realistic/
A 1000 calories is too few, although at first by doing this you might notice a rapid weight loss you would make things harder in the long term. Firstly because you would struggle to stick to it as you would likely be hungery, likely to feel down, tired and probably miserable because you would lack energy and probably nutrients you require.
Worse still this sort of dieting causes the body to recognise famine situation and as a result it lowers the metabolic rate. Therefore you will find that it is harder to lose the weight..and when you do start to nromalise calorific intake you would put on the weight again and fast.
As gaz said 3,500 cals is equal to a pound of fat(thereabouts).
it is recomended in order to lose weight safely and effectively that one aims to lose 2 pounds a week...to do this one would need to cut down the weekly calorific intake by 7,000 cals. On average, most women can do this by cutting calorific intake to about 1500 kcals a day.
I think that to lose weight effectively and for the longer term as opposed to yoyo dieting it is good to be realistic and moderate in your approach. rather than just focusing on the weight loss and cals...maybe concentrate on making small and conveneient alterations to your diet to increase health.
So, you could take an honest look at what you eat and find areas where you can increase the nutritional intake..eat better...eat things that make you feel really physically well.
For example, increase fresh food, veg, fruit etc..and try to cut down on processed foods. Increase complex carbs so the energy from your foods is giving fuel slowly over longer preiods of time..as oppsoed to sugar that gives you a quick hit and wears off fast and makes you ultimately feel bad.
Exercise is so important...as well as assisting weight loss it also helps to increase your metabolic rate so basically you can eat well and your body burns it off well..so you end up finding a healthy weight and it stabilises..rather than the typical fluctuations that oftn go hand in hand with dieting.
Exercise will also tone you up and improve the appearence of the body..so you may then focus less on what the scales say(which is demoralising and unhelpful) and more on how you look and feel.
Good luck,
hal

Hi all
Thanks for all the advice, now I only have to stick to it.
Sunbeam, I will dig out the Mckenna book again, and relax into it.
Everyone is right, I need to exercise more and eat less. Just need to keep up the motivation. Anyone else feel the same?

Definitely me - I managed well on the exercise front today - but all the chocolate in the house from Easter is not helping! I struggle all the time with my motivation. If any of those lovely Reiki ladies could send motivation as well as healing....
Good luck to you!
