Question:
A friend of mine had an initial Hopi Ear candle treatment from me for a blocked ear and has since had 3 done by his wife (she is a chiropractor so watched me do the 1st treatment). His ear is still blocked but he has been back to the doctor a couple of times who just tells him to put warm olive oil in his ear and will not syringe them. He does not feel any difference from the ear candles but wants to keep trying them. My only concern is that my homeopath had a bad experience where he had 3 Hopi treatments for a blocked ear but it actually made his ear worse by heating up the wax so it impacted on his eardrum. He eventually had it syringed by the doctor.
Does anyone else have any experience of this?
Thankyou,
Florence
I am a qualified hopi ear candling practitioner and I had a blocked ear before Xmas, I have to say that the candling made no difference to my ears. I got ear drops from the chemist which dealt with the compacted wax otherwise I would have had to have had my ear syringed. I was totally deaf in one ear and maybe if you have compacted wax to that extent all the hopi candling in the world will make no difference. Water got into my ear when I was swimming and that caused it. All I know is that I couldnt suffer any longer and as much as I would have loved the candles to work, they didnt.

This might sound a daft question - but it has been confirmed that it is wax in the ear canal - sometimes the blocked ear feeling can come from congestion behind the ear drum & the wax isn't really the problem. If it from behind the ear drum gentle massage of the SMC in the neck might help relieve the pressure by opening the eustachian tube.
Hopi this helps (sorry couldn't resist)

This might not be any help at all but I used to use things like Earex and Otex (if that's the right name) until my GP said they are actually irritants.
Ever since I've used olive oil to soften the wax after that was recommended to me. I need to get in the habit of doing this regularly to soften it enough so I can have my ears syringed.
The ear canal needs to be looked at with an otoscope - if was is really impacted then yes syringeing is the only thing that will work, Hopi wont.
I often get blocked ears but its def not impacted wax, so Hopi does help me.
Thanks for all your replies. I spoke to the client on friday and he has been back to the doctor who said there is less wax in his bad ear - whether that is from the Hopi or olive oil I don't know. I am doing another Hopi course on saturday where I am taught to use an otoscope so I can monitor what is happening more effectively.
Um.. excuse my ignorance FB, but what is the SMC??
Thanks all, as ever (god, I love this forum!)

I guess she means the sternocleidomastoid muscles.

It appears I'm a few days late on this conversation, but, I myself have a stopped up ear. I did the warm olive oil last night & it appears to be stuck in my ear now. I can't hear a thing out of my right ear. Before I used the olive oil, it wasn't this bad. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to remove what's left of the olive oil? Should I "flush" it with warm water? I've tried alcohol already....nothing. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Donica
Hi Donica, I wouldn't put anything else down the ear & I wouldn't try and and flush it with water either. This might help - grab the top part of the pinna (the very top of the ear), pull it up gently and slightly backwards this should straighten out the ear canal which has a slight bend in it. Tip the side of your head over to the shoulder (affected side) and see if that helps drain excess oil away from the ear.
Ideally someone with an otoscope should look into the ear to see what is actually going on.

In waiting for a reply, I did flush with warm water & that seemed to have helped.....although the problem still is there. I guess I'll go to the doctor next week & see what the problem is. I think I have (as I've aged) started getting a lot of ear wax build up.My mother used to use the candle thing, before they stopped selling them over the counter (at least here they have). She liked them a lot. I just don't know what to do except go to a doctor. But I appreciate your reply very much. THANKS!!

I had a client who decided to give hopi a go. I checked her ears with an otoscope and her ear was 'full' of dark wax, couldn't see the eardrum.
I did her treatment and she said it didn't feel any different. I gave her some oil from kateyes. She made another appointment for the following week, and still no 'success'. She bought some more oil as she'd used it all up.
Got a call asking for an emergency appointment as she now felt extremely disorientated, had a a constant 'swishing' noise going on and couldn't hear anything.
Still no 'success'.
She eventually got her ears syringed and felt instantly better. I check her ears every month and they are nice and clea.
Thanks for your input! It is day 2 & this is driving me crazy! I hear everything as if I'm in a tunnel. No pain, no swishing noises, just plain 'ol tunnel hearing! I will most likely go to the doctor & have the ear flushed. Never done that before, does it hurt?
Thanks,
Donica
