Question:
Hi all!
I have had a few nudges toward learning hypnotherapy of late, I have looked on a few websites and I must admit I am none the wiser as to the different levels one has to take in order to qualify. I could also do with knowing the approximate cost of each level and the length of training period etc.
I would be grateful for any advice and also, if anybody knows of a teacher (if that is the right term) in the west yorkshire area, I would appreciate a recommendation.
Many Thanks
Donna
Hi Donna,
How ironic - I was nudged into hypnotherapy from a quite different career, and am now being nudged towards adding reiki to my hypnotherapy skills - and here you are doing it the other way around!
Unlike Reiki there are no "levels" in hypnotherapy. As it also unregulated, anyone can set up as a hypnotherapist and likewise anyone can offer training.
The choice of courses is bewildering though - some claim to train you in a weekend or two, but all they actually teach is how to hypnotise someone, then provide a book of hypnosisscripts. IMHO these are very limiting as they adopt a "one size fits all" approach, can tend to deal with symptoms rather than underlying causes and don't show you how to construct a tailored script to the individual using the resources they already have and they don't teach about the potential pitfalls in hypnotherapy. Others offer a more complex course encompassing another counselling or psychotherapeutic discipline but of course they are also more expensive. The course that I did covered brief solution-focused therapy and hypnotherapy, was over a 11 month period and cost around £3500. I'm afraid I don't know anyone in West Yorkshire so can't make a recommendation.
The first thing you need to decide is how you want to use hypnotherapy, then I'd recommend that you look at the courses that are approved by one of the regulatory bodies that aren't aligned with a training school, such as the General Hypnotherapy Council or the Hypnotherapy Association (links below). Again you need to be careful - sometimes you can see something like "the national council of xxxxxxx hypnotherapy" and it sounds good but if you look closer it's actually only the registration body for graduates of a particular training course.
By choosing a course that is approved by the GHR or the HA, not only has it met their screening criteria, you then are more likely to be able to get insurance to practice.
Many course providers offer "taster" weekends at a reasonable price - a good way of learning self-hypnosis, getting a good overview and deciding whether it is really for you.
If cost is an issue, you can always consider a Career Development Loan - that's how I funded my training.
If I can be of any further help, do let me know.
Amber
Thanks very much for your reply Amber. I do feel that there are very many similarities between Reiki and hypnotherapy although they may not be immediately apparent, they will become more so as Reiki practice progresses.
Sounds like quite a minefield, I will have to do my research thoroughly into hypnotherapy before I make any decisions.
I feel Reiki and hypnotherapy would complement each other very well, so if you would like to learn, it can only be a good thing.
Love
Donna.
HI Donna - are you interested in using it with clients? ;-)
I am yes, I would like to be able to offer both Reiki and Hypnotherapy.
Hello Donna
I did my training with The London College of Clinical Hypnosis (LCCH) and have to say I am very satisfied with their standard of training. They are linked with the OU and you are able to gain credits via the hypnotherapy training. If you are going to be helping people with hypnosis, then you really need to complete a course that offers not just a one or two day input, that essentially only scratches the surface on inductions. Clinical Hypnosis is a whole different ball game. There are some quality providers out there and I would suggest that you do your research and look at what each has to offer and weigh up the benefits of each provider. To get from Certificate Level to a Practitioner Diploma with LCCHwould take about 320 hours of directed (in the classroom)learning plus assignments and one-to-one supervisory sessions and examinations for each level. Hard work but well worth the effort.
Hope this helps
Peter
I use NLP, Time Line Therapy tm and Hypnosis plus some other techniques all combined in what we call a Breakthrough Session, I am trained to Master Practitioner level in all of these areas and can work with anyone with any preseting problem, whether that be trauma, abuse, emotional / mental / physcial problems, IBS, asthma, depression etc
Let me know if I can answer any questions - do you know what kind of problems you may want to work with?
