Question:
Hi all
One of my students is going to specialise in healing animals rather than humans. Does anybody have any information they would like to share regarding their experiences of animal healing?
Are there any differences in techniques used? or different laws?
All information would be appreciated by me and my student. Please feel free to pm me if you would prefer.
Many thanks.
Hi Reikidonna,
I just wanted to mention that a friend of mine is a Bowan Therapist and specialises in horses. She is very successful and sought after in the Polo area of Sussex

Hello reikidonna
If your student is going to be treating animals professionally as opposed to just giving some Reiki to ones own animals and those of friends, then he or she would need to look into the legality of it all, including specific insurance.
There have been a number of threads on Reiki and animals, both here in the Reiki forum and in the Pets, Animals and Wildlife one. Some are mostly anecdotal ... and great reading ... some a bit more technical. All can be easily found by searching in the appropriate forums, but two from the Pets forum which immediately come to mind are:
The title is "Quick question- reiki and horse and vets?" but it turned out not to be quite so quick ;)- mainly on horses and insurance though.
"Who can treat animals?" This one is pinned as a sticky at the top of the Pets forum.
There are further links there, and references to animals who GIVE Reiki as well as receiving. My dog has received much Reiki from me over the years, but never an attunement, yet she gives Reiki. When her paws go hot and I hold them in my hands, the healing is quite something!
I hope you find the links of useand interest. My best wishes to you and your student.

Hi Reiki Donna,
What a lovely idea for your student to be interested in the animals.
There are legal aspects and it is best that your student becomes very up to speed with any such aspects..legal..who can treat animals, under what circumstances vets should be in attendance..and insurance etc.
In fact it is sensible to chat to vets and insurance companies who are knowledgeable with legislation..then your student is properly in the picture.
Whenever I do a reiki first degree, I do include a section in my manual and some time talking about healing animals. Also I have a few times given workshops for people who are especially interested in healing animals.
For those workshops I did include times spent actually practicising giving reiki to animals as I fortunately have some ponies, horses and dogs and cats who are willing to have some.
If you do decide to include some practical training and practice with animals you need to be certain that the animals used are safe to handle, suitable for people to watch, handle, touch etc and happy to help you out.
For example, some aniamls might be quite happy for you to give them reiki but may not be so happy if you have a small group of strangers.
But if you can organize something like that it might be enjoyable and helpful to your students.
I do always get students to begin on people and teach the reiki..probably just as everyone else does, I like to help students become confident and give them plenty of opportunity to ask questions, go through things again if they need to.
I go through chakras etc for people...I also include in my manual diagrams of chakras on horses, cats and dogs.
I then consider it very important to cover health and safety in regards to animals as well as people. So, I try to make people aware of the good they can do as well as any limits they may have. For example, anyone can give reiki to a horse, however, if the reiki healer has no experience of horses then it is obvious that they should proceed with common sense and caution.
Horses..and cattle and many other aniamls are large fellas, the handling of such animals is specialsied and should be left to those who know what they are doing. There are health and safety points in how you approach and handle all animals..for their safety and yours..anyone else who happens to be there.
I tend to feel that if someone doesn't know their horses and are not expreienced handlers they should stick to well behaved, happy, relaxed and safe horses and always under suprevision of the owner.
I do give tips on how to approach such animals and what helps them tick.
Silly things like..you know when many people have a reiki they can be desperate afterwards for a pee..and thirsty.
Animals are the same. it is improtant to ensure that cats and dogs etc are able to go out if they need to so they are not distressed.
Now with horses..that brings us to another point that so often comes up but is not thought of. Most horses will not pee on concrete...they usually poo wherever but horses can actually be embarassed to pee and prefer to do it on a surface where it wont splash their legs...yet most people tie their horse up in the yard to be groomed..treated etc.
So, it is improtant to understand how they think and act and what you can do to make them comfy..just lots of little silly things like that.
Also, most horses love reiki and are very tactile creatures, they love touch..yet some may be tickly and object to certain touch. So, for example..it can be handy to give them a groom first..then do the reiki.
Again dogs can be the same.
So, really you can help your students by sharing your own experiences and perhaps pointing out any limits..most people are aware of these. But I am also aware that especially with horses, many people have nothing to do with them ever, some are a
I haven't given Reiki to many animals but thought you might be interested in this....
I was asked to give Reiki to a very large Rottweiller (sp?) who had recently had an op on hisleg which had become infected and swollen. However this particular dog didn't mind being stroked but would growl if you just rested your hand on him for any length of time. I got round this by resting one hand on the affected leg giving Reiki and continually stroked him with the other hand. He was quite happy with this, just occasionally sniffing the hand doing the Reiki. He let me know when he'd had enough by removing himself. I gave him a total of four treatments and his owner was amazed with the outcome.
Thank you very much for the advice every one, it's much appreciated. I have treated dogs before I have only treated my own ones though. I have helped heal one of my dog's torn ligaments which at the time the vet said could not be healed. The dogs leg is find now, she can enjoy playing and walking with the other dogs. I have treated my other dogs for emotional traumas and they really enjoy Reiki.
Sometimes when me and my partner are self healing, they come and start nagging us because they want Reiki.
All will pass all your advices onto my student, I am sure she will also be very grateful.
Thank you
Donna.
The results from reiki can be extraordinary, I don't think I have ever given a reiki or recieved it without being amazed...and I have been doing this for quite some time now...but it never ceases to amaze me.
A really good example of a very rewarding experience: A lady asked me to try my, "wierd and wonderful tricks," on a horse she had trouble with. her words..not mine.
The mare had various issues including a very bad hip and was clearly in a lot of pain. also I was given to understand the owner was perhaps the greatest problem she had. She never handled the mare or attended to her needs, as a result her feet were in a terrible state, her sweet itch was chronic and the mare was not willing to be caught or handled. Apparently she had been going for people if they approached.
The owner wanted the mare to be put down but of course she needed catching first...I was simply told to try and catch her and found the rest out in due course.
Mare was standing near the gate, me on the other side, I gave reiki from a distance, simply outstretched fingers and it really kicked off. The mare came a little closer and I continued. She was clearly very lame, however she suddenly grunted, wriggled her hind quarters, stretched and wandered off.
People watching said she had not appeared so mobile for a long time..apart from when approached by anyone.
So, I went and caught her. When I realsied what was to happen I felt the mare was not actually in an urgent need to be put to sleep. i felt that treatment for her sweet itch and having her feet done might be enough to afford her a descent quality of life. So I put it to them that it would be cheaper to give her to me instead of having a vet out to put her down.
I collected her an hour later without any aggression or trouble, treated her sucessfully and she is currently sound and living with a nice family who are able to hack her lightly and she is having a great life.
All thanks to the reiki!
Hal
What a lovely story!
Yes Reiki is amazing, a different experience every time. Just as I was writing this, a reiki II student called and said that when she had been treating a client today she has merged with the C.K.R and spiralled inside the patient. She had never experienced anything like this before and said it made her cry.
A lovely story from Hal indeed! :) From what I know of her from her posts here though, it does not totally surprise me ;)
One does sometimes have to resort to a little ermmmcunning ... with humans ...in the best possible interests of the animals. I won't elaborate ;):D

I had to post to this site today I gave Reiki to a freind's horse who has been a problem. The horse had a scan a few days after the first reiki session. The scan confirmed where I thought the problems was. I have given the animal a few sessions but still send distant healing.
My friend was out riding the horse this morning and said what a different horse he was now. She then smiled and said have you still been sending reiki as he is so diffrent!!!:)
How wonderful is that, Somerset Angel?! A happy horse and rider again!
Well done,
Love and light

That is a lovely story, it makes it all worthwhile doesn't it..everything is good when something like that happens. Reiki is such a wonderful thing, I am so grateful for it.
It reminds me of a funny thing..well a good thing in fact.
It was when I first discovered reiki and attended my reiki first degree. At the end of a session before we grounded the master suggested that we send all the reiki and wonderful energy to someone distantly. No one could think of a recipient..I think maybe they were all a bit overawed and uncertain and about this aspect of reiki as they were new. So I suggested a delightful pony who had been having a few small troubles.
I used to give his owner riding lessons on him and while he was kind, gentle and perfectly behaved he did have a few troubles.
He was reluctant to go into canter though he was sound and healthy, he was also lethargic..though an obvious problem was not apparent. I suspected he had had a bad time in the past...we found whip mark scars when he was clipped out..and I picked up from healing i did already that it was kidneys.
I later found out he had issues weeing...which is something that can happen to animals and people when they have been stressed..sort of holding on to things. Although the stress was gone the habbit remianed..and no one can work well with a full bladder..and of course not weeing when you should causes all manner of troubles.
So we sent the reiki and I forgot about it as soon as I went home.
That evening the pony's owner phoned up and said..wow, you should have seen him today..he was almost excited..like any ideas...that did make me smile.
Needless to say the said pony recived lots of reiki since and I am sure you can all imagine that he turned out very good and plenty lively!

Oh it's lovely to hear all of your animal stories.
Thank you.
Donna.
Our cat, Ziggy, is now 20 years old and quite blind, but otherwise doing well. He loves having reiki from myself and our youngest daughter. In fact, every night, he sits on my knee and literally, "expects" reiki!! He's really receptive to it. I've also been asked by various friends to do healings on their cats and dogs, all of which have been wonderfully successful. :)
