Question:
Hi, I can't help reading these Reiki threads - you also sound so wonderfully enthusiastic. I joined HP because I'm training as an aromatherapist - and thoroughly enjoying it. I am becoming curiouos about Reiki though, and wonder whether it might be something I should think about. I'm based abroad, though, so I'd love some guidance as to what you feel about distance learning.

Hi Nell
I like you have been drawn towards Reiki more and more over the past few months and had my first 'treatment' last night during a girls night at one of the local schools. All I can say is that on finishing the treatment and talking to the 'practitioner' (?correct term) about learning more it became clear that this was definately the start of a great journey.
I believe that Publisher indicated on another thread that "when ready to teach a teacher will find a student and vice versa". This again holds true as my practititioner will soon take her Masters and this will certainly ties in with my search to be taught.
Hi Nell,
do you mean a distant attunement? I would be careful about taking one that gives attunement to Reiki 1 2 and 3 altogether as it can be better to attune to each level seperately as you don't know what effect it is going to have on you as you go through the dettox/clearing out process. Also, you would miss out on the teaching that usually goes with atunement eg; hand positions, history of reikiand a chance to have a practice.
Obviously its your decision, but these are my thoughts.
Good luck in whatever you decide,
There are a number of international HP members (France, Spain, USA, Canada, South Africa, are the ones I can remember at the moment) so perhaps if you tell us which country you're in, someone might be able to give you info about a reiki organisation where you are?
I have found that reiki combines beautifully with aromatherapy. I would agree with what Floffle has said. Don't miss out on the 'hands on' attunement experience and the chance to make some new friends, at least for the beginning of your reiki journey. Also, make sure you have a treatment before, if you haven't already, so you know what it is all about.
Yes Nell it is wonderful indeed, it is like the best chocolate cake you have ever tasted and not so wonderful if you can't touch the chocolate and have to imagine it.
Imagining the chocolate and eating it in physical reality cannot be compared. So my advice is let the universe know that you are ready and indeed the teacher will appear at the right time and in the right place. Just make sure that you are in safe hands because this universe works in mysterious ways and sends us many tests of our integration of discernment. Check out the RM's history, lineage, reputation and credibility also before, during and after-care support.

Thank you all for your replies and insights. I'm based in the Netherlands, but right up in the North. My Dutch is reasonable, but not brilliant. I think you're right, and I should try treatment forst - it's just finding it! I am pleased to hear it combines well with aromatherapy too. I'll continue to think.

Hi Nell,
This message comes from Scotland but I am Dutch and my family still lives there. My sister lives in the North East Polder (Emmeloord) and is a Reiki Master - we did Reiki 1 and 2 in London, Advanced Techniques is Manchester, Japanese Techniques in Cumbria and she did her masters at Glastonbery with William Rand. If you can not find somebody you can connect with in the north of Holland I would be happy to put the two of you in contact.
My sister speaks English more than she speaks dutch (lived in South Africa untill the age of 20 something) and she is a translator by trade so no language problem there!
Good luck in your Reiki quest - if you decided to go down this road it would be an amazing yourney. I do Reiki, Spiritual Healing and Indian Head Massage but Reiki can be used with most therapies and will be a wonderful addition to your aromatherapy.
Any more questions? I know that when you start looking into Reiki there are many questions - these are the right pages to post you questions in as you will get loads of varied replies.
Jobelle - thank you so much! Would you recommend having a treatment before thinking about attunement? From what I know so far, isn't it supposed to be that the student and master are drawn together by the Reiki energy? Perhaps it is working through you to draw me to your sister?
Is there any reading you would suggest to help me decide if this is for me? How did you know?
Nellx
Oh Nell,
So many questions!!!! OK, just my weird sense of homour! Yes, I would suggest a treatment first - I went for a treatment with our first Reiki Master to see and feel and meet her and I did have a wonderful experience - hense went for Reiki 1 and 2 with her. I do think it is not a bad idea and would even say that you could have more than 1 treatment by more than one master before you make up your mind. If the time is right and the master feels right then everything will come together. There is no rush - read as much as you can - there is soooo much on websites about Reiki and as there is also more than 100 kinds of Reiki to choose from, take your time (Rainbow Reiki, Ascention Reiki, Blue Star Reiki, Seichem, Seichim, Sekhem, Reikin Ho, Reiki plus etc. etc.!!! - so, my advise would be take it slow, gather information and you will know when it is right for you - trust your intuition.
I would be bias and tell you to read Penelope Quest (she has 3 books out - Reiki for Life would be a good one to start with) - as we did Advanced Techniques and Japanese Techniques with her. However - take a look in the Reiki forum - there is a thread on books and you might find many other recommended books. Will also advise to go and look at your local library as these might be books which you will enjoy very much or not connect with at all - getting them from a library will save you loads of money and give you a mountain of information. Ever get to The American Bookstore in Amsterdam? good place for all sorts of books!
Hope this helps,
Jo,
Not sure if the library in sleepy little Assen will have them, but will look. Yes, I have been to the American bookstore, and there is also a Waterstones in Amsterdam, but my husband won't let me go to Amsterdam too often as I spend too much money.
I think I might buy the Penelope Quest book - I read the thread and it is recommended lots.
Another question, if you don't mind - what are your feelings on distance healing and attunements?
Groetjes,
Nellx
Nell - have a look at these sites for information about reiki, finding a master, etc, if you haven't already found them, that is!
Hi Nell,
Oh, I know what you mean about spending too much money on books - this is why I check the library first. I know the English section in my sister's library is very small - hope you have more luck!
Hmmm, distance attunements - I do believe that they can work (I however, have never had one but there has been some discussions on this on the pages), just as sending distance healing works - however - I think you will benefit far more from finding a master and getting a hands on attunement. For most it is a wonderful experience and I also believe you build up a bond with your master, learn the basics by having a teacher and also having somebody you can ask questions to if you are unsure. There are many varied thought on this - you will find people on the pages who do this and you can even bid for an attunement on E-bay so it is readily available. My personal opinion is that I enjoyed the road I took and it worked for me - whatever you decide will be the right road for you.
Groetjes back to you!
Luna - thanks for those links. I've had a brief look, and I'll follow them more thoroughly when I have time. May I ask what your view on distant attunements is?
Jo, I'm going to give this some more thought, and see if I can make up my mind. It might just be that I'm not quite ready yet.
Thanks both,
Nellx
