Question:

there are 1day courses covering ihm. they say that you get a certtificate and are able to use the course to do the public. is it possible to be able to do this in just one day? help

Answers:

HiyaWell, i've booked onto a course this saturday (Gateway courses, london) and I will leave some feedback afterwards.Personally, i dont think it's possible to learn ANYTHING in one day,it's like learning to drive - you only fully learn once you've passed your test!iFor meit's about the skills that you learn at the training and can then take away to develop. I guess it just depends on the qualifications of the therapist - you see, I'm a registered reflexologist so i have the anatomy and physiology qualification, and the first aid already.Iwill be offering IHM to the public afterwards (once I've gone and practiced on a few people!) and will be confident that I know enough to charge for treatments and put it on my insurance. There are always pros and cons of doing a short course....I'd be wary of a reflexologist who said they learnt it in a weekend so i would fully understand someone being wary of me saying i could do IHM having learnt it in a day. But having the therapy background already, i see it as career development and enhancement rather than a solid qualification. Certificates don't really mean anything to me (you cana fterall make one yurself!), but having your skills recognised and accepted by a registered association of therapists is whats important.Overall it's a difficult question to answer really, but i'm an experience therapist -people have to start somewhere on the road to becoming a therapist though, so dont let this put you off if you're looking to spread your wings and try something new!Ax

I have just completed IHM course - VTCT - 24 weeks. I had done A & P the previous year. As I have no massage therapies under the belt I think the longer course gave me confidence and the opprtunity to build up real good experience. I would say that if you do any massage therapies then a 1 day course will be perfect - however, if you have no massage background it might be hard going to get to grips with everything in one day.
I did my course through the local college and it costs £210 - not sure what a one day course would costs but if you have the time and a local college offers this course you only need 2 or 3 hours a week.
Good luck and enjoy the course - IHM is a terrific therapy in many ways.

Well said folks, espesh alxpix ...
Courses are like a driving test. I did initially do a one day course in IHM which I thoroughly enjoyed and find the therapy to be effective however I have since converted to VTCT level 3 and feel much more confident and better about things

neenie9 - some years ago I did a weekend course in indian head massage, which I enjoyed immensely. I was told afterwards "here's your certificate of attendance - you can go and get paying clients now". Which I did not agree with. Reasons? There was no a&p covered, no contra indications covered. We were just shown how to do an ihm. No more, no less.
At the time I wasn't a therapist, but still believed in proper training. And I'm not sure that you would get covered insurance wise for this.
I would say enjoy the course as an introduction to ihm; then maybe go for a fully qualified course.
Best of luck!

how did the course go? well i hope! did you learn enough in just the one day or was it a waste of time. regards jan

ah one of my beefs!
personally I dont think anyone who attends a one day course in IHM should then be able to go and get insurance and make money from it.
This is your career and your skill set take a little time and get a qualification in it,it doesnt have to be itec or vct etc but make sure there are case studies make sure there is an exam.
Its not just about getting a quick qualification and to many people take this short route, role on the day when IHM is regulated.

Yep did it - it was cool. Just enough information to be able to absorb in a day (11am-5pm), the teacher was lovely, nice small group of 8 ladies and relaxed atmosphere. I'd recommment this one. Only a day but I feel confident doing it and i've already had a go on a few clients who love it!

Just a note for anyone reading this thread and wondering what course to do themselves, my IHM course was 2 days learning the practical, a home study course in A&P, 6 case studies and a practical exam. I was already a Reiki practioner, but with that and the IHM the main thing I feel I missed out from not doing an ITEC-type course was the business side of things. I found this a good way of learning, though, as I could do it in my own time.

hi sadie, i was the one with the beautiful scalp, jaw bones and shoulder joint movement, i think jane said that were many other attributes i had but didn't want to make you all envious of me being as we were all paying clients, lol. yep it was a good day wasn't it? i came home and went straight out to an indian party(someone that works for my husband is a hindu), coincidental that! i didn't want to boast to them that i had been on an ihm course bcos they would probably had laughed. great party though so i am very lathargic today and dont want to massage anything( yes i mean anything). i was a bit apprehensive whether one day would be enough but it was, its a great therapy. regards jan

Hi Jan!
Yes I'll remember that scalp movement (enviously) as long as I live!!! Tell you something,my arms and back areaching like no-ones business today, all these hand movements take it out of you! Hope it all goes well, I'm usually on the reiki forum, but i'll check in here regularly as well now. Actually meant to ask you where you are doing your reflexology at the moment as I'm contemplating that.
