Local councils have the power to require massage practitioners to obtain a licence. As far as I am aware, all the London boroughs require practitioners to obtain such a licence, although the majority of councils outside Londondo not. Members of certain professional organisations may not need to obtain an individual licence, as their association may have negotiated a special block licence for its members. You would need to check this with your professional association (if you are a member of one).

I know that IPTI of retford, englandhave negotiated with london boroughs, so their members dont have to have lisence for london either, worth checking as they do group policies for therapsits.

Hi, I haven't heard of having to pay for a licence...

I think the idea of licensing in London boroughs is to try to stop (or at least make money from) the amount of so called 'masseurs' operating from 'health clubs and saunas'......most massage organisations have negotiated a waive in licence fees for genuine therapists, so you should check to see wether this applies to your own.

ps apologies for spelling mistakes!! i always confuse license/licence and wether/whether!!

A wordsearch on ‘Google’ (for ‘massage and special treatment licence’) indicates that it is not only London boroughs who require such a licence. For example, the Chiltern District Council website states:

And the Birmingham Council website states
I am surprised by Louise’s comments, and would politely suggest that she should check her position with her local council ! Someone who has just moved to the UK might state that he or she “hadn’t heard of” having to pay income tax on his takings. But I think that the Revenue would still require him or her to pay income tax!
