Eating for your blood type diet
Question:

Just wondered if any of you are doing it OR what your general thoughts are on it.
I read the book a few years ago now! As a blood type A I followed the instructions for roughly a month, I never felt so ill in my life so stopped it and went back to my normal eating and felt much better.
I have 2 friends who are taking this diet to every letter in the book, they have both been on it for about a year, neither has lost weight andone of them is developing sensitivities to foods. Add to this they generally feel unwell, hormonal, tired, emotional. They both swear by the diet but they can't convince me as I just don't think they are doing well on it but it seems its almost an obsession with them... btw Neither of my friends know each other.
Just wondered what your views on the diet were - good and bad.

Hi EmmaI bought the book, bought a kit to test my blood type and then began reading the book. I was supposed to cut out a lot of the foods i consider healthy, eat a lot of meat (which i consider unhealthy) and then sold the book at a car boot sale for £1!I know people that have done it and sworn by it but when i was faced with changing my entire diet from something i consider really healthy to a diet that i consider unbalanced, i thought it sounded as dubious as the atkins.i just wasn't prepared to give it a go. to lose weight i'd much rather cut out sugar or fat- not fruit and veg!Ax

Tried it for 5 months - did everything in the book and felt dreadful! I'm afraid I didn't give the book to the charity shop like I normally do - I put it on a bonfire! I have gone back to eating everything I ate before, just in moderation and no more snacks and fizzy drinks - I think just being sensible has made more difference plus I am walking for a hour each day. I didn't lose any weight on the blood group regime, but have since January when I started eating 'normal' food, but monitoring portions and drinking more water.

Thanks you have just confirmed what I feel.
One particular friend I am worried about. She is doing so badly on the diet and keeps blaming food in general rather than the bloody stupid diet!!!! Anyone got any ideas on how to convince her to go back to normal healthy food? I just looked up bloody type diet and fraud on google and masses of pages came up!!!!
God my blood is almost boiling actually!!! My OH keeps going on about the diet as his sister is on it and I think i will show him the evidence I found today - maybe he can convince his sister to stop the diet!

This may seem a bit far fetched, but it almost seems as though someone completely dependant on a diet such as this which is obviously not good for them and who refuses to listen to a reasonable argument for stopping the diet, could be regarded as having an eating disorder.Would you agree with this? Perhaps this could be an approach you take with your friend - you're worried that this has taken over her eating habits and she's obviously not benefiting her health by carrying on. I wonder if she were to do a cholesterol test whether it would be too high etc Perhaps you could get her to agree to a few tests - science might actually sway her to look closely at the effects of the food on her body even if friendly advice has proved ineffective.Ax

Buy her a copy of Patrick Holford's Optimum Nutrition book, don't comment on her current diet, just say you thought she'd find it interesting. It has lots of check lists and questionnaires, which I think help people who like to be told where they are going wrong and what they need too stick too to make their eating habit healthier.

ps. I have know a midwife & highly experienced nurse who say that the Blood type diet is great and makes total sense. Can't believe it myself and as some of you have already said wouldn't even bother giving it a go.

Hi there
well i approached my OH last night and got my head bitten off! So theres no chance him talking his sister round... Mind you she's pretty strong character and forceful but unfortunately i dont even think he is going to try!He just had a go at me saying 'god just because she isnt on your diet doesnt make it wrong'.... my diet is healthly eating and nutritional supplements - no books or fads btw.
Apparently 'being group A she is too alkaline' I asked OH if she had tested this! He didnt know but I think probably not, so I'll post some pH testing strips in teh post and see... But there goes theory No. 1. Everyone in our house is Blood A - NONE of us were Alkaline including the kids, we were all acidic so are working on bringing the acid down. Now if we assumed because of our blood type we were alkaline and ate a more acid diet then we could cause problems.
I think she will be coming to visit us soon, so hopefully something will be said then... I just cant stand the thought of listening to her go on and on about what she can and cant eat for 3 days whilst at the same time listen to her ailments caused by the food she is eating. I listened to it biting my tongue last time we saw them, this time i doubt I'll hold back.

I understadn the point you're making about the danger of generalising a particular blood type as being too alkaline when the acidity test hasn't even been done. I imagine that there is a notice somewhere in the Blood Type diet book that says that this diet may not benefit everyone and that it may not work for some people. I wonder if your friend has read this bit (if it exists).
Also, i imagine that if certain people have different sensitivities/allergies/medical conditions and then embark upon this blood type diet, that there might be some 'clashes' in the digestive system.
I'd be as concerned as you are about a friend if i saw that she was following this diet strictly and it was making her unwell. And like yourself I would want to tackle the subject with her.
The thing is though, we're both healing people and want to be able to help. However, I realise that in situations like this I need to take a step back because I probably overwhelm people with my opinions. I'm not saying that you're doing this, after all, it's hard to know how to handle this right andit's natural to want to help...but if your friend is evergoing to stop this diet which is evidently messing up her homeostasis then I guessshe will eventually do it on her own.
Perhaps you can find a contact number in the back of the Blood Type diet book which allows you to write and ask questions about the diet, or to find out some of the research on which the diet is based. This might be something that your friend would be interested in reading.....coming from the same source that is....

I know exactly what you are saying! One could be classed as interferring, opinionated and a 'smart arse' by saying anything at all! I've found some articles to print off for my OH to read and I'll leave it at that...If I can get him to see it in black and white he may brooch it with his sister. I do hope for her sake she returns to a normal healthy diet soon. Unfortunately anything my partner says about our diet, she comes back quoting the book and tells him he/we shouldnt be eating this and that. All she ever talks about is this diet - an hour long phone conversation over the weekend has been totally about the diet, it certainly appears to be an obsession/eating disorder. Though I seem to be the only one to see it!

well good luck and please don't get too frustrated over this. instead try to encourage her or find recepies that may be healthier for her but that are still suitable for the diet......and i imagine supplements are allowed aren't they?
peace, love and chocolate, (which definitately wont be on the diet but hey!)

I believe, I could be wrong so apologies if I am, type `A` blood group is the most common of which I am one.
Taking this to be so, the majority of the population is eating wrongly according to this book then.
Like you say you gave it a go and it made you worse so stop doing it. There is always that thing about it makes you worse before it makes you better and in some cases it is true, but you shouldn't carry on indefinately.

This is real BS, I know a biochemist who just was skeptical and read into it and confirmed with me its BS, don't trust all those "diet trends" all they do is make themselves billions of dollars a year and disappoint people serious about being healthy.
