Orange essential oil
Question:

Hi
I have recently been talking to a friend who had undiluted orange essential oils drops placed directly on the skin. She has had a severe reaction to the oil. I was suprised that this happened because I was under the impression that undiluted essential oils should not be placed directly on the skin. Can any one confirm if that is the case?
Thanks

Answers:

There are one or two essential oils that can be used undiluted in small quantities on the skin. As far as I know orange isn't one of them. The citrus oils, in particular can cause a skin reaction on some people, so this is not to be recommended.
Was this done by an aromatherapist?

Lesley is quite right.........there are two oils which are safe to use in moderation directly on the skin and they are Lavender and Tea Tree. Citrus oils particularly can cause irritation.
Essential oils can be very dangerous and should be treated with care......under lock and key if young children are in the household.

Citrus oils shouldn't be used undiluted as you can see. However, there are more than two oils that can safely be used undiluted. Peppermint oil can be used undiluted and is anaesthetic and fantastic for muscular pain, I use it a lot. Black Fir I also use neat, one drop on the forehead for relaxation. I have also used Frankincense in a similar way. You need to know what you are doing though.

Thank you all for clarifying that.
I was informed that the therapist had not done a spot test before the treatment either. I have asked my friend to find out if the therapist was a qualified aromatherapist

Hi Candie
Did you mean Balsam Fir? or was it Black Spruce? ( I use both but for very different reasons) I think if its the oil I told you about it is Balsam Fir?
Hi All
As some of you know I use essential oils neat a lot but you must make sure the quality is organic and top notch and that you have had specialist training in this type of application. They are only used this was for a short period of time and then only on acute conditions. Having said that I am not sure why Orange oil was used in this way as I can see no reason for using it neat! I would be very interested why they chose it.
