Question:
Hi all,
New member here.
I am about to start case studies for Advanced Reflexology and two of my proposed clients have endometriosis and fibroids. One has a Mirena coil fitted already and the other is about to have it fitted. Does anyone have a view on how well reflexology works alongside hormone releasing IUDs.
Would appreciate your responses.
Many thanks
Sue
Hi Crystaltips!
as a reflexologist with a mirena fitted I can say that Reflex is still very effective and I don't think that treatment is any less effective as a result of having the IUD.
hope this helps,
Lisa x
Thank you Lisa
I was a little concerned that my treatment might work against what the mirena is trying to achieve for these ladies. Hopefully it will enable them to settle down with their coil as one has just had it fitted a month ago and the other is about to have hers fitted.
Thanks again
Sue
hi!
I hope you dont mind me commenting but i was taught during training that if a client had an iud fitted we were to avoid working the uterus reflex as the stimulation may dislodge the coil.
as an advanced student you may be taught something different! I certainly look forward to your comments as there is always something to be learnt not that i would practise anything i had not been taught. But it helps to enhance my understanding!
many thanx Ruth
Hi Ruth,
we all got taught slighlty differently about lots of things I've discovered over the years;).
Never had any problem with treating ladies with IUD's fitted, I'd just be aware of any discomfort when working the area. Also they can be abit tender when first fitted.
I've had mine fitted for about 10 years ( on my 2nd) and I can assure you I've had plenty of Reflex in that time with no problems either!
I would always say work within what you've been taught, your experience and with what you and your client feels comfortable as a rule of thumb ( no pun intended:)) But I wouldn't hesitate to work the area and adjust the pressure as required. As a suggestionyou could always ghost over the uterus reflex ?

Thank you both for your comments. I am at my advanced course this evening and will query my tutor re not working IUD clients. It was never raised as an issue in our earlier course and I have mentioned my potential case studies and no eyebrows were raised.
When you mention ghosting do you mean the same as what I would call linking, ie just gently touching the reflex?
The one thing I am most gutted about with one of my ladies is that she has spent 10 years "trying" and adopted a couple of years ago and I had always hoped that if she attended for reflexology regularly we would be able to rebalance her to enable to as a minimum a regular cycle and of course it would have been wonderful if all of this had led to a pregnancy. Of course now with the advent of the IUD this is absolutely not going to happen, the pregnancy, I mean.
I know this is going on a bit now but when I worked on her last year as an aromatherapy case study, I was incorporating reflex work during the treatment and she did stop bleeding for 8 weeks!! Which was fantastic for her, but during this time her uterus reflex became dry and flaky (not helped but her then pumice stoning it!). This lasted for many weeks. I was trying to not get my hopes up, but she was tired, had breast soreness (occasional usually) and felt out of sorts.
It led me to think the impossible. She had been told around this time that she would definitely not conceive naturally as she has only 1 ovary (with cysts, not polycystic) and 1 tube (damaged), fairly severe endometriosis and fibroids. After 8 weeks she had "worst period ever". I felt at the time that may be shewas been pregnant and it had not reached its potential whilst being terrified that maybe she was and it was going to be ectopic which would obviously cause her further problems. Following her return to bleeding she refused to have any further treatments and cancelled our last 3 sessions, blaming other things for non attendance.
Sorry for the essay. Have you ever experienced a response such as this with a client? May be I'm being naive to think that I could have over5 weeks transformed her gynae system. She was my first gynae case and maybe I was a little optimistic.
Have you done the maternity reflex course? If so, was it useful?
I'll stop now or I'll be here all day. Your views would be welcomed
Many thanks
Sue
I have had a somewhat similar case: client presented with 1/4 remaining ovary (yes, one-fourth), after ovarian cancer at a young age (19). Had previously conceived after four years of acupuncture and carried baby to a premature birth, he is now three years old. After three months of sporadic reflexology she conceived again, which ended in a miscarriage at 13 weeks. One year later she conceived her third pregnancy after a serious of close reflexology sessions, this too ended in miscarriage at week 14. According to her lab results her hormones were not steady enough to sustain a pregnancy. However, the fact that this client was able to conceive twice with reflexology is very positive. I feel if the client could have continued reflexology after conceiving there may have been an effect on her endocrine system in a positive way. However, it is not for me to say or know.
I am sorry your client gave up hope and opted for the IUD, her quality of life may improve greatly with the stress of not "trying" for a baby for awhile. Perhaps she will consider trying again in the future and look to you for a gentle push in the right direction?
Hi,
I haven't done a full maternity course although I did Lena Chandlers "taster" with the AoR. I do plan to though as I'm seeming to attract such clients!
I have had a similar experience recently with a lady who came for reflex for relaxation and back ache, had not used contraception for years as had been told she would never conceive naturally...well to cut a very long story short, she's about to give birth any day!
Yes, ghosting is working very lightly over the area in answer to the question.
Ruth ~ in answer to the question about Website, I found it easy to build and maintain so far, its not too wizzy, but I think it looks ok??? I think you must have followed the link to Jai Franklin's site ( a good friend who's an accupuncturist, I built her site too, mine's the one above, the calma one) She trained in five element accupuncture apparently its the leading place to do it???
interesting that you said about the dry skin/hard skin your client had, did it continue around the heel of the left foot? if it did this is representativeof a deep fear of falling pregnant!
Lisa x
Her peeling skin only affected the medial side did not go round the heel. It covered an area about the size of a satsuma.
Having just started "reading feet" on Thursday, now cannot wait to get my hands on her to start my case study as this may lead to a further enlightenment for me.
Thanks to all for your comments and advice
