Essential Oils for psoriasis
Question:

Hello
A friend has asked me to do a massage for her to see whether essential oils would help with her psoriasis, which is a bit bad at the moment due to stress.
I am not an aromatherapist but am very interested in the subject and am thinking of trying a blend using EPO and Grapeseed Oil as a base with a few drops Tea Tree Oil and Lavender added. I was thinking of Roman Camomile as well but not sure if that is wise.
Any advise would be gratefully received.

Hi Jackie
A good tried and tested Blend for which we have been using for years.
Lavender (20 Drops) , Bergamot (10) and Geranium (10)in a 100ml Carrier oil.

I would be inclined to do a 24-48 hour patch test before the treatment, to check her reaction. I don't think I would use tea tree either as this can be a bit harsh.
Oils I would try in various combinations would be rose, lavender, geranium and chamomile roman.

Hi Jackie,
I agree with the oils mentioned already.I would add immortelle (very good for psoriasis) and frankincense to rejuvenate her skin.

Coming to this post abit late I know but I would be cautious at massage psoriasis especially if its in a bad state. Use the oils by all means but to apply only. Rubbing an area where the skin is fragile and flakey and possibly open could make it sore. Finding out the underlying reason for your friends stress would help also. Using stress reducing oils in a blend could help as Aromatherapy is about treating somebody holistically and not just a specific ailment. Hope that helps and good luck. Let us know how you get on!!

I've had success with Pau D'arco lotion in treating psoriasis. The problem with psoriasis is that it can become sore and inflammed soooo quickly, a test patch on any oils would be a must and only gentle efflurage.

Wheatgerm oil can be applied to patches of psoriasis on the face; it should be also used as a cleansing oil.
Or mix together 10ml (2tsp) wheatgerm oil and 2-3 drops of benzoin oil ( or thuja or cajuput), and apply to the skin morning and evening. If this does not have much effect at first, slightly increase the amount of essential oil. If there is no result after about 2 months, try the remedy using another essential oil.
Use compresses of rose water with parsley and chervil to remove excess oil.
Avoid sore areas of Psoriasis. As the others have said a skin test would be a good idea.
Doing VTCT Aromatherapy course any help appreciated as Tutor Alan useless.

I would not recommend anyone using thuja oil without seeing a clinical aromatherapist as it is highly toxic.

As a student Aromatherapist and a sufferer of psoriasis for 20 odd years, I have tried most things - but have recently found that using Lavender and Juniper both in massage blends/creams and as compresses has gone a long way to clear mine completely.
I have also been using Evening Primrose oil, both as oral capsules and topical application. 3000mg per day is current recomendation.
I am happy to discuss my experiences further on a 1-1, pm me.
Good to be here!
