Question:
hi,
i've became a qualifed therapist since july, but can't seems to find any jobs in scotland!!!! i've been to loads of interview, but they all rejected me cos i have no salon experience.
now, i've started to send cv to some salons for work experience but still not in luck.
could anyone share some tips with me on how/where to look for vacanies? right now, i've only been using internet and local newspapaer as my source.
i'm really panicking now, as i really worried the longer i leave it the harder i can find a job!!!
please advice,
thanks

I am not a beauty therapist but also live in Scotland. I volunteer at a hospice where all sorts of things (including healing therapies) are offered to people with cancer, ms, etc. I have also heard of other hospices and hospitalsoffering beauty therapies to 'sick' people. Maybe you could volunteer a few hours or a day at a place like this and thus get some experience?
Suppose at the same time you might take your CV to a couple of salons in your area, tell them you are available to do temp work in case one of their people are off sick or on holiday - all experience is better than none! If you are able to, tell them you can come on short notice so that if they receive a call from somebody calling in sick you can cover all the appointments for the day, this will show them your willingness and once you have a foot in the door........
Good luck,
Jo
jobelle,
thanks for the advice. i have actually applied to volunteer. however, the problem i have is lack of salon experience. i'm willing to help out in a salon for a short period of time to gain experince, though i'd worry i'll sound too desperate. also i don't know where to look for job vacanies, i just randomly call up salons...
Hi remedy
Have you thought about working for yourself? When I qualified in July 2005 I intended to work as a mobile therapist. However, having tried it for a couple of weeks I found it quite hard work (mainly because of the equipment you need to carry around with you, and all the travelling).
So I decided to make my spare bedroom into a treatment room instead. It didn't cost too much to convert it really, and I bought a sofa bed so at least it can still be a guest room when needed. A friend of mine did something similar with her garage, tho that was more expensive to convert.
It's great, I love it! It's very rewarding being self-employed and of course all you earn is your's (instead of getting paid a low starting wage for working very hard for someone else).
Also, Business Link offer free courses to anyone looking to start their own business, and the help and advice you receive is excellent. You can find details of your local Business Link office in the phone book.
Hope this gives you 'food for thought'
Kind regards
Debbie
Wow...Thanks Debbi. I was thinking about that the other day when discussing with my friends! Shame I can't do it my flat at all, it's tiny...but I'm thinking maybe I can hire a room in the hairdresser or something, right?
I don't know how easy/hard it'll be, but at least I have one more opion and I'm excited by just thinking that!
Anyway, is there anything I should be careful of if I decided to start a room? Of course I know there's always risk of not having enough client to cover my expenses...
