Question:
hi
i was wondering if any1 could help me.
iv been offered a job in a lovely salon the only thing is there only just starting up so there arnt n e clients. it is hair and beauty combined & the person in charge no's nothin about beauty. she wants me 2 get the equiptment sorted set up a price list ect...
but shes only willing 2 pay£5 an hour but i feel this is not enough if she wants me 2 do every thing. should i ask 2 b head beauty therapist so i can have more choices or am i asking to much?
Will she pay you back for the equipment once you have sourced it or does she expect you to buy the equipment and pocket the cost yourself?
If its first then it sounds ok if you believe you are worth £5 an hour (sounds a little low to me?), shes just asking you what you think she should get for her salon as she doesnt know anything about it.
If its the later I'd be inclined to find employment elsewhere. Its like Woolworths taking someone on but asking them to buy their own till!
If you are just sourcing the machines/equipment, maybe you could chat with the salon owner about a one off payment for the work you will be putting into it?
Also the thing about Head Beauty Therpaist, if she is asking you to do all of this stuff I should think you would already be the Head Therapist, if not, get the person who is to sort this ladies salon out!
Thanks.
im not sure what she wants yet. i think she will buy the equiptment but i will tell her what 2 get. so she is just paying me like an employee but i will b doing everything.
i like the idea that i will have more choice and be incharge ( if she lets me)
The money is bad but it will go up when more cleints come in (so she says) and the money is always quite bad in evey salon to start.
however there is a therapist already working there ( i dont no how as they have no equiptment but this is what iv been told) and she isnt even qualified yet so it think i should b over her as i will b doing all of the treatments & i should b paid more as i have more experience. how do i find out how much she is bein paid?
Well, short of going up to the other beautician and asking her I dont think you can find out how much she is on.
It sounds as though you need to speak to the salon owner again with a set of questions that will clarify your job role etc. Also, make sure that your salary increases are written into your contract (ie when you have 20 returning clients you get £1 extra an hour or something along those lines).
Ask the salon owner what she wants etc. Would she pay you the £5 an hour whilst you are looking for the equipment she needs, what role you would have, what role the unqualified person will have, what responsibilities you will be given. Dont be afraid to ask questions!
Hi Pinkangel,
It sounds a bit worrying that there is a therapist working at the salon who is not qualified!!!! I would definitely question that is I were you - especially if you are to be "head Therpaist" - I wouldn't want somebody working with me that wasn't properly qualified.
Are you going to get £5 per hour regardless of whether there are any clients? If so, initially I would say that wasnt too bad - but boring for you to sit all day waiting!
I would push for more though, or definitely get a contract stating that the pay will be reviewed after x months/weeks.
Good luck!

i think (but am not sure) that she has nvq 2 & only does them treatments.
Thats the thing if i was 2 work there i wouldnt wants some2 who is not qualified 2 work with me, so do i have a right 2 say? ( i dont want the girl 2 lose her job though id feel bad)
and as she has no idea about beauty do u think it would b cheeky of me 2 ask who i wanted 2 work there ( i only want whats best 4 the salon & really hope it works out) yes it will b £5 even with no cleint but she wants me 2 help her with the hairdressing if its busy ( i was a junior so i no how to tint & perm ect)
Forgive me for not understanding what level allows you to do what legally, but it might be worth asking the salon owner if she is expecting you to mentor the other beautician and for her to shadow your work (or you have to be in on her treatments). If she does then you have every right to make sure the position is comfortable for you and also ask for more money than £5 an hour.
Well, I think at the very least, you have a right to ask her if all the therapists are insured. If they are not qualified, they won't be insured.

ok thanks 4 ur help
i will c her 2 morrow and tell u how it all goes

Sad as it is, the minimum wage for our (me & you) age is supposed to be £3.80 (going up to £4.10 shortly) - so she could pay you that if she wanted to. If you are going to be 'head therapist', I'd definitely ask for more - I worked in a salon, and when my boss was away I was in charge, etc - I got £4.00/hr. She said my wage would go up, but it never did, needless to say, I left (not just because of wage, but she was a offensive, spiteful and overbearing too, - she started shouting at me in front of clients - I don't think so! If she had been nice, I'd have tried to have a chat with her, but she wasn't, so anyway. Good luck!
An NVQ2 course in beauty if the girl has passed and is insured is a qualified person in the field she studied. Ask to see certificates and insurence certificates that the girls holds (these should be displayed on view to the public in the salon also) the only difference in the NVQ2 and 3 courses are that the 3 level is usually advanced level (what would be needed to work in top salons and health spars) there is also the level 4 I understand that is the exquivilent to Highst level attainable like a degree.
In all cases a vaild certificate of insurence is need to perform treatments on paying clients wether the indervidual gets it or the salon does.
