Do you 'test' your students?
Question:

As a reiki teacher, do you assess your students on their ability to channel reiki at the end of the course? Just wondered what you're thoughts are on this...
Perhaps there are other reiki students that have had the same experience?
I just wondered whether this was necessary and whether different students can channel reiki at different levels and whether if you fail your test it will do any good to have an exra attunement.

Answers:

Hi Azalia, What is there to test? Encouragement ought to be what teachers ought to be doing.

Yes I agree there!
We are tested on our ability to "sufficiently channel energy"- maybe she just wants a free treatment?[sm=rollaugh.gif]

Hi Azalia
I am starting to require feedback from hands on healings in my online classes, primarily as it is the only way I can make sure they know how to use the system, I also require them to send me healing and if its a master class to send me the attunement prior to me issuing a certificate.
With hands on instructions then I would receive healing hands on and sense if things where not as they should be and make the necessary adjustments to make sure the energy paths where clear and flowing strongly.
It is good to see the fruits of your labour and to give someone an attunement with instructions and not see if they had received it and could use it prior to giving a certificate would not be right IMO.

Hi,
I do "test" my students, although I'm loathe to call it that.
Receivng healing from a student....I work on a one to one basis....is done for two reasons.
1. It ensures that I have done the attunements correctly.
2. It helps build confidence in the new Reiki healer. If they are unsure about what they are feeling, then by doing a treatment on me, I can reassure them that the energy is flowing. Also doing a full treatment allows them to really feel the energy flowing. I talk them through all the things I am feeling during the treatment, correct their hand positions and give them encouragement.
They find it helps a great deal.

Hi,
I test the professional aspects before I can give a certificate to practice professionally. I test my students on bedside manner, giving a treatment politely and with professionalism, and generally by observation throughout the course.

Hi Azalia,
Yes although I wouldn't really term it as a test as such, as part of the course they have to do a partial treatment on me and also treat each other either on a one to one basis or as a Reiki share. This is to enable me to acertain that the energy is flowing well and that their manner and hand pressure is acceptable. It also gets them over the first hurdle of actually giving a treatment and is an opportunity to encourage them. It can show then that by relaxing and not worrying the energy can flow freely.

This is a difficult question for me.
I would say that I don't test my students, but:
At level 1, I ensure that there is plenty of time to practice the hand positions, and I ensure that the students experience what it is like to be a practitioner and a client. I try to make sure that they all feel the difference in the quality of the "energy" as a giver and a receiver.
At level 2 I ensure that their documentation includes the "correct" (according to the way I was shown that is) ways to draw the symbols. I have come across very few people who can hold the correct calligraphy, colour and sound of HSZSN, even after a two day course.
At Master/Teacher, the student will not be able to remember all the physical and inner plane actions of an attunement at the end of the course. So again I ensure that the documentation is as thorough and detailed as possible.

sorry I pressed the wrong button
I try to hold regular FREE Reiki practice evenings as often as possible, and maintain a 24/7 helpline.
Though in the end my main difficulty is, after ensuring I have done my best to competently teach Reiki, to let the student discover their own way to practice, without feeling that the way I have taught is the only way to practice

Hi Lionman,
I work as you do, letting my students work on me and each other. I give lots of handouts so they do not have to write too much down, plus a manual. My Reiki II manual covers in detail how to prepare themselves/the room/the client for Reiki and how to close the session. How important it is to be professional when working with the public and to know when to refer on if they feel they are not comfortable with anything that comes up in a counselling context. I also offer after course support via e-mail and phone. As said, I tell them what I teach is then for them to go off and explore and 'play' with the energy to feel what is 'right' for them.

Sorry Azalia can I butt in to ask a question please?
When I was attuned to Reiki 2 my master gave me a list of requirements I had to complete, to be written up and presented as a journal to her, before I was awarded my certificate. Do any other Reiki Masters do this? It took me about 3 months but at the end of it I had learned a lot and felt much more confident in practising Reiki. :)
Reiki 1 was as most of you have said already - practice the hand positions, feel the energy as a client and practitioner.

Nope!! I don't.
I train as Reikiangel and Lionman train. Lots of practise, full manuals, lots of aftercare (if they need it) and regular support/share evenings.
Perhaps the only testing, as such, is at Levels two and three when I endeavour to ensure that the students can draw the Symbols and say the Mantra Names of the Symbols that I have given them.
I cannot see what else there is to test - not even setting-up a business, because not everyone chooses to do so and there are so many combinations if they choose to do so.

Hi,
The skills that you need to get to grips with when you use Reiki on yourself and others are easy enough to acquire, and can be 'checked' upon during the course itself. I see no necessity to give people extended projects to carry out after the course, though making yourself available to support your students long-term is very important.
Best wishes,

Hi Paul
I suppose if your certificates just state that a person has attended a course in such and such then it does not matter but if you are going to certify someone as a master teacher etc then don't you think it is only right to ensure they are capable of doing that prior to handing them a certificate?
I know from personal experience that occasionally you come across someone who for whatever reason cannot sense the energy but they can channel it and as long as they follow the instructions can heal and I would be happy to give them a practitioners certificate but I would not certify someone as a teacher in these circumstances as they would not have a clue what their pupils where doing.
Also in some instances I have come across someone who cannot channel the energy even if their life depended on it. I would normally offer them a refund and not issue a certificate because they are sadly incapable of doing what the certificate would say they could.

Haha...we had one of those people in our class!
Well, I passed my 'test' today, and although I hadn't wanted to do it and resented the fact she was 'testing' us, I think this was only really because I was worried I would fail! It may have been partly the attitude of the teacher- because although she sometimes attempted to put us all at ease I still felt a little threatened, and don't think this would have been the case had I done the course with someone really inspiring and motivating.
Anyway, thanks for all your replies, and I'm so glad Í passed!!!!
