Ears felt they were burning - please help
Question:

Hi,
I did a treatment on a friend of mine last night. Firstly I checked both ears and she did have a lot of dry brownish looking wax in her ears and she was suffering from slight tinnitus in her left ear, although this had subsided a lot from when she initially had it.I did the left ear first and the treatment went well but then I tried to putthe candle in her right ear andthe opening to the ear was very narrow, and was difficult to get in, tried to squash it a little to make a little less harsh and was then okay, although the seal around the ear wasn't great as there was a little smoke coming out. However, she then felt that her ear was burning, not inside but at the opening and it was more than she could bear so I had to take it out? I've done quite a few treatments before and never had this happen.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? What do you do if you can't get the candle in? Anyone had a client with this burning sensation? Would it be in a case like this that you would use the Blend 27 drops?
this was her first time for treatment so even though you explainthey are still quite anxious about what to expect?
I'm just glad it was a friend of mine and not a paying client!!
thanks

Hi,
I've not had the same problem - my only quick thought is that the ear canal is inflammed- maybe a skin infection. If the ear canal is narrower than the last time you did a treat then there is swelling, with infection comes heat - the combination of the candle in the ear pressing against inflammed infected skin might give the sensation of burning in the ear.
If it is an infection - I would get that confirmed by GP rather than put drops in the ear.
Hope this helps

I would agree that there may be some infection or that the candle was too far in the ear canal.. if someone has a very small ear canal it is best to hold the candle just above covering it best as you can but without trying to insert the candle. Impurities will still be drawn out regardless of whether you've made any kind of seal. I have a collague who has treated someone who has one ear missing and she 'hovered' the candle over where the ear should be but still gained great benefits from the treatment.

Hiya,
Thanks to you both for your thoughts on this one!
I didn't notice that the ear canal was inflammed but it could have been the start of something. It's interesting to know that you can hover the candle over the entrance to the ear and that it will still work without the seal! I wasn't aware of that, so thanks again!
I have spoken to my friend today and she hasn't reported any soreness in her ears from the treatment - maybe I was just trying too hard to get the candle in?! Don't know my own strength?
anyway, thanks again to you both, it's a real help!

I get this sensation in my bad ear. BUT i do have slight inflammation probably due to ear eczema. Personally ii dont mind the very warm almost burning sensation as it does feel as though it is 'healing'. Dr's wont treat my ear as it is only inflammed with no infection as such, I am continuing the Hopi treatment in the hope that it will eventually clear the inflammation.
However if the inflammation is bad you shouldnt do hopi anyway until it is cleared up.

I wouldn't have a problem treating someone with an infection i their ear - but I wouldn't put the candle in the ear canal.. merely hover it above the opening.. you can still get some positive results without doing anything. You shouldn't squish the candle to get it in, just rest it gently at a point which feels comfortable to the client.

Hi,
One of the things you can do to make sure you get a good " seal " from the candle is to, cut with a pair of scissors up its length so you can tuck it around its self, which makes the candle smaller
Hope this helps

Oooh thanks Ian - that would be really helpful for children and small ear canals!

When we went for the otoscope training, Sue showed us how to use one of the plastic speculae that goes on the otoscope. If you twist it onto the end of the candle (in a sort of pencil sharpener movement), it creates a funnel which fits easily into those with smaller ear canals.

Just be careful though Aromababe - I've had a Dr shove one of those things RIGHT in and my god it hurt. I never put the speculum too far in as i know it can hurt.
