EFT - I'd like to help my sister with her weight problem
Question:

Hi
Since I downloaded the free manual 2 months ago I have been using EFT on myself for various things and am very pleased with the results.
My sister would like to try EFT to help her lose weight and has asked me to help her. She has had a weight problem for about 20 years. Over the years she has joined weight management groups and lost weight then gained it again and says she can't stick to a healthy eating plan for longer than a few weeks at a time.
The problem is, although I could think of affirmations that worked on myself for my emotional problems, anxieties and phobias, I don't know what affirmations she could use for the weight problem. At different times when I have spoken to her about it she has given a range of different reasons why she believes she is overweight.
Does anyone have any advice as to what affirmations we could try to maximise the chances of it working for her. Would it be best to work through each different reason she gives for the eating habits she currently has or is there one main affirmation that might cover the whole lot. I would be very grateful for your help. Thanks.

check out emofree.com and put weight loss into his search box. it will bring up helpful articles
I might start with
E/T I am overweight I deeply and completely love and accept myself
E/t I have tried and failed before I deeply etc
E/T I dont think this wil work I deeply etc
Ask her what she feels about herself and then work with eg low self esteem, self hatred/feels a failure.
I like the choices method to finish off with
e/t I am overweight I now choose to make healthier food choices
good luck

Hi Sandra,
Here are a few suggestions:
Ask her:
"what happened the last time you were slim?"
"complete the following sentence: I want to stay slim but.."
"complete the following sentence: I want to run/go swimming/go to the gym but.."
"complete the following sentence: the worst thing that happens to me when I am slim is.."
"what food or drink can you not go without?"
"what does food remind you of?"
and treat for anything that comes up
If you can get hold of the Specialty Series 1 video set, there are plenty more suggestions on there, maybe someone can make a copy for you.
Let us know how you get on!

Just wanted to say thanks to Suzanne, been eating like a little piggy of late and reading your post I now know why. Time to do some tapping for myself..
I would agree with the things that have been mentioned - if you can get hold of the vids I would advise tapping along to them, she wont have to work too hard and wont feel she's really being put through the mill. If you get a chance to watch them you'll get a load of good ideas cause they are brill.

It may seem like an odd thing to ask her but try asking "What would you have to change about your life if you were no longer overweight?"
Just as an example it could be things like "Oh I would have to get up from in front of the tv and do more housework" or "My friends would expect me to go down the club with them and I'm scared of that" etc.
You may be surprised by the issues that can actually be attached 'behind the scenes' so to speak. Then you need to work on those issues and this should help with keeping off the weightloss that she achieves through healthy eating etc.
Hope that helps

The above answers are great, well done guys. If needed, you could also ask what happened in her life just before she started to put on weight all those years ago.
An example could be:
I was slim all my early life up until I left University. But I felt overwhelmed with fear of not getting a job and I started to put on weight.

Once you know some of the things that were happening before the weight problem started, ask her how she feels right now about the particular thing that happened all that time ago, or how strongly can she connect with those feelings now.
Then tap for the feeling associated with the weight gain. eg. Even though I connect very stronlgy with that feeling of overwhelming fear of not getting a job, I deeply and completely accept myself.
Hope this helps too.

Thanks Steve
Yes, I do feel that her weight problem has very strong emotional connections.
She has always seemed quite guarded about her own emotional issues but she said a few months ago that she realised she hasn't really been in touch with her feelings for a long time and I'm wondering if she will find EFT difficult because she will need to connect with the feeling associated with what she is thinking about. What do you think?

I still think it would work, as I have had many people say to me that they are a bit disconected to certain issues, then found an unusual amount of relief afterwards.
Try it and see. If it doesn't work, change it around a bit.

Giles and Steve
Could you explain those last 2 messages please? I don't understand. Thanks.

In your reply (post #8), you said that your sister told you that a few months ago that she realised she hasn't really been in touch with her feelings for a long time.
Giles then spotted a statement waiting to be tapped on. "Even though I havent been in touch with my feelings for a long time, I deeply and completely accept myself."
If she taps on that statement, she may find that she can reconnect to her feelings again and maybe, just MAYBE, she may find a difference in her eating habits.
It is widely known that some people eat to either suppress or keep their feelings under control.
Hence the connection issue.
Hope it helps

Thanks for the explanation. I still have to get some more practice with thinking about straightforward affirmations without complicating things in my head!
All this help has been great. Much appreciated.

Hi
great thread!
I would like to use EFT for weight loss too. I am not overweight yet, but will be soon if I carry on the way I am. About a year ago my waist was 32. A few months ago I had to buy some new suits because 32 became too tight. I am now at 34. For the last few weeks I have noticed that 34 is becoming tight.
I am obviously putting on weight.
After reading this thread I can think of some setups with EFT but I can't seem to associate feelings with them. e.g. I cant imaging a number to see what level I am at.
Any help will be appriciated greatly.
I know 1 thing I need to do is speed up my metabolism rate.
The other thing I need to work on is to getup and do some exercise.
Remove crazing for certain types of food.
Have the will power to actually eat healthier.
Thanks
