Question:
Hello everyone
Having hit more brick walls and raised eyebrows than genuine interest, I would be really grateful if you could post how you go about describing reiki to those who ask?
Healing energy etc etc seems to phase a lot of people, so I have recently taken to describing it as a method of relaxation & stress reduction with added health benefits (as Wm Lee Rand suggests!! )
I suggest people try it before making a snap decision but still don't seem to get many taking me up on the offer..
Thankyou, thankyou ;)

this mite be a too technical to decribe to clients but something like
reiki uses the life force known as chi or ki that enters the body via the chakras and flows throught the merdians and surrounds us in the energy field called the aura, a balanced and unblocked ki equals goos health whereas if the ki is dirupted or blocked it will interfere with the functioning of the body and thus cause illness. wehn receiving reiki the rei assess the healing need and directs the reiki energy to unvlock negative thought imprints and the energy block and cleanse with positive energy. reiki causes the vibrational level to rise and cause the healthy ki to flow in a clear and a postivlely natural way
Or something like reiki is the non-physical energy used by all healers. it is the use of the life force ki guided by the spirtual wisdom rei to heal on the physical, emotional, mental and spititual levels. and list the benefits
not sure if this is of any help, its prob a bit too "oh my god what is she on about!" for clients
Everything that is alive or has a shape, has some kind of energy. In a non-living thing, if that energy disappears, it will crumble and lose its shape. In a living-being, if that energy vanishes, it would die. Perhaps this is the energy, which has been described as " Universal Life Force Energy" or Reiki in Japanese language? Universal because it is present in everything we have in the universe. So, very briefly Reiki can be defined as the energy that gives life to everything. The definition is short but the explanation can be long. How we use Reiki and what benefits do we draw is a different question.
I usually start with my catch-phrase... 'Reiki is a touch healing which balances energy'. I then go on to refer to different types of energy such as our electro-magnetic field, the energy which powers our bodies and minds, how it all connects.... depends on the audience and where they're coming from. For more scientific minds, I go into the energy a little more deeply, for new agey minds, I go the other way... ;)
Most discussions then trot around the 'is it faith healing then?' question and any diehard sceptics are treated to my story about the sceptic who remembered a shoulder injury after I'd focused on it with Reiki energy. Then it's go on... give it a try...

I'd agree with Moonfeather. Touch healing or even your phrase, healing energy. Keep it simple. Maybe offer to do 10 minutes at the end of another treatment the client is having for them to try it out.
I find that there are two kinds of people; one that likes the sensation and is happy to get the effect without knowing how it works, and the other who once having tried it wants to know more.
The soft sell often works better, since Reiki is so difficult to explain. Plus, there are so many variations on a theme I often find that clients get confused as they are told such wildly different things by different people. And of course lots of people will be put of the more 'new age' everything gets. Not a criticism, but lets face it. It's all a bit weird, and someone not into all this kind of stuff can be put off by talk of angels, chakras, ki, etc.
You could always remind people that, as Usui Sensei said, they don't have to 'believe' to get the effects.
Let the reiki sell itself.
Perhaps a simplified version of stargirl's post ... I usually find that if I describe, or rather define, the "ki" part of Reiki as being the same energy as the "chi" part of Tai Chi, or "prana" as in Yoga, that people seem to be able to get an understanding of what it's about. This is possibly because Tai Chi and Yoga are seen as more physical or active than Reiki, therefore they can relate to that aspect and it makes it appear more tangible.
Holistic
For the potentially skeptical client, I explain totally truthfully that we all have an electromagnetic field around our bodies, and Reiki is a way of making that more balanced so that we feel better.
