Question:
I have been having a few thought on reiki and considering if we where taught the way it was used when it first came into being then would we have to learn two different things to channel it?
a) I feel we would have to learn to work with our own energy and learn to project it to others as they do in kung-fu and pranic energy work etc and that would be one half of the equation? if this is true then this part of the equation seems to have got lost or mainly ignored in the western approach as this takes a little time and effort and discipline to master.
b) we would also have to learn to channel the universal energy, directing and manipulating it as we do, this part is taken care of to varying degrees depending on your tutor and what you are taught, another thought on this one is should there be any advanced reiki classes as every scrap of information a teacher possesses should be passed on to their students as one continual process not particularly as levels but you need to learn this that and the other and at the end you are now a functioning reiki person?
c) the two would then be put together and you end up with Rei & Ki being energetically combined and channelled in various ways for healings, balancing and cleansings etc, and hey presto that to my understanding is the recipe for Reiki.
Now does that ring true with anyone else or have I missed any of the steps??? or has my understanding gone haywire !!
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts :-)
Dear Paul
Yes I agree
I would add self discipline and self mastery as very important aspects
what did Dr Usui used to say, I read somewhere something like "when you have accomplished an impressive healing come back and you will be ready for the next stage."
Additional learning is essential for those that have not been trained in other healing therapies and helps with progression, confidence and trust. We run both monthly Reiki development groups and extra tuition days for those that require it.

Hi Kim
Thanks for your comments, I was pondering on where Usui came from when he channelled in the attunement and then put that together with the way I treat and pull all the resources I have together when treating and could not imaging him not using what he had already learned prior to the attunement :-)

... I think this is one of the many spurious quotes attributed to Usui Sensei.
We should remind ourselves, I think, that Usui Sensei's system was not really about treating other people. That was a sideline, not emphasised or focused upon. His "system to achieve personal perfection" (as he called it) was a self-healing and spiritual development system, a path to enlightenment. It wasn't about treating others and there certainly weren't treatment 'technqiques': what he did was simple and intuitive.
It drew on existing tradition: Tendai Buddhism, Shintoism, Teate, and no doubt his experience of kiko (Qigong) and Yagyu Ryu (swordsmanship).
Best wishes,
Hi Taggart
Yes I understand that reiki was and still is though some do not realise it a self development system and the healing of others is a by product, I guess that is why there are so many different versions all trying to emphasise a different aspect of what the different energy connections can accomplish as some of the systems are based on healing more than self development so it has been stood on its head in some respects.
I did do some martial arts training about 20 years ago and learned the self energy discipline and must admit I often use this with the energy when I am getting near to my limitations to give it a bit more oomph, especially when I do not have enough time etc and was considering if it was a good idea to incorporate that into some of the energy channelling teaching, then thought that Usui did something like that so maybe it would be helpful?
Yes, I agree with that, Paul. The 'standing on its head' seems to have begun with the Imperial Officers who waded into Usui's dojo, altering the system, changing the emphasis towards working on others rather than working on the self, and Dr Hayashi's fascination with the treatment possibilities of Usui's spiritual system, given his medical background.
I think the point is that Reiki is endlessly malleable and accommodates various ways of working. I don't think that we necessarily have to live in some sort of time warp and only practise Reiki in the way that Usui seems to have taught it in the 1920s, but it's powerful to root our practice in the original method, but to be creative too, to find our own style.
Best wishes,
