How much should I pay?
Question:

I making arrangements to do massage treatments at my local health centre and they don't know how much they should charge me for use of a room. They have asked me to give them a rate, they currently have a reflexologist who pays £5 or 27% per 1hr treatment. The percentage sounds a lot to me, but really don't know.
I would be so happy to hear your advice.

Hi Angelfish,
At one clinic where I work the charge for the room is £30 for an evening session, and £20 plus £2 per client for an afternoon session. The sessions are about 4 hours. The other place was a room in a sports centre and that was £7 per hour with no additional client fees.
Hope this helps,
Lucy

At all the clinics where I work, I pay per hour for each client I treat, i.e. if I don't have a client, I don't pay. In one I pay 30% per hour, which is for a £27 reflexology treatment, but have to bring in my own towels and couch roll. In another I pay more £10.50 per hour flat fee regardless of the treatment and I can set my own charges, but they provide towels and couch roll, etc.
It does vary, but decide what you can reasonably charge, work out what is included in your rental and think how much you need to clear yourself and this should bring you to a fair decision.
Good luck!

I pay 20% of my fee. Perhaps you could suggest a low fee to start with , and agree to re-assess it shortly depending on how your business develops?
Hope this helps.

Sounds like a good deal to me
it depends on how much you charge per hour really as to if it is worth it.
I pay around £ 250.00 a week with rates , water rates elec gas advertising
if i have no clients or have a holiday i stilll have to pay.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It sounds like 27% on my takings is a fair deal, all I have to do now is convince the owner that massage isn't as dangerous as she feels. ;)

Hi Angelfish
If the owner of the sports centre thinks massage is dangerous, I sure hope you don't have to rely on her to drum up business for you! Yikes. Good luck with trying to convince her otherwise, I'm sure you'll do great. There must be compelling research which illustrates the many benefits of massage.

Hi, yes definately give her a (very good!) free treatment and also to everybody else who works there if you can.
The charge is very good - snap it up. At one place I work I pay 40% of what I earn and I have to wait a month to get it - but they do supply towels.
However, at the

I get a much better deal and pay for sessions and get paid directly by the client.

I agree, and I did suggest it BUT the owner has a real thing about being touched & will not let anyone near her. A total brick wall.
I got such bad vibes after our discussion, that I really have gone off the idea of working there. Such a negative environment is going to zap all my energy and as the owner will be booking in clients and promoting me, I don't want that negativity to rub off on them.
I'm really disappointed, but its better I make the decision now & not after my clients have had poor experiences. :(

Hi AngelFish
That sounds like a wise decision under the circumstances, there is nothing worse that trying to lift the spirit in a place that has a downer on what you do, I am sure you will come up with something else more positive that you will be happy with, have you seen if there are any small business units locally as you can get a start-up unit very reasonably with easy in easy out terms.
