Question:
Hi everyone, I wonder if any of you could help me?
I attended an Adult Education Class this evening as their guest speaker/therapist and talked about Reiki. There were 10 people attending the class and afterwards they all said how much they enjoyed the talk ( which was very kind of them!). One lady approached me and said she worked with people with mental problems ie could hear voices/'see' things etc and that they had been asking her if Reiki could help them. So she asked me and I shared with her my thoughts that I felt a lot of people in mental institutes could well be people like myself but who were too 'open' to the energy etc. I said I believed Reiki could help them close down and handle the energy in a more controlled way. She was very interested in hearing this and asked if I could come to her place of work some time. I heard myself saying yes. Now, I have a fear of mental illness because of things that happened in my family when I was a child, although I feel sorry for people in that situation. How do I get around my personal feelings if I am invited to meet this ladie's clients?
I know the logical thing is to Reiki the situation etc but I'm not sure how these clients are going to react to my energy if they are too open.
I hope you can shed some light on this for me

It is my belief that often the psychotic and the mystic are in the same waters - but whereas the mystic is swimming along, the psychotic is drowning. You need to be very careful when dealing with psychotics that you do not tip them out of balance, and precipitate a difficult crisis - it is mainly about timing and safety.
I believe distant healing can be very helpful - but here is an important point - it should only be sent with prior permission from the receiver. I know from experience that psychics who are going through a psychotic crisis may pick up that they are receiving healing - and have a paranoid reaction.
When stabilised, mental health patients do well with healing. A colleague of mine helped set up "The Stress Project" in Islington, which provides healing to mental health patients in the community, after discharge from hospital. Do PM me if you would like further info or contact with colleague - who is a NFSH healer.

Having treated people with depressive problems, I've found that Reiki is wonderful for their mental stress. When I worked at a local centre, I made sure each person had a counsellor to speak to, just in case the treatment brought up anything. I intended a bubble of Reiki around myself so that I wouldn't pick up any negativity. I centred and grounded between each client and only treated around two a session.
As for your personal feelings, I'd look on this as a wonderful opportunity to heal this fear from the past. Send Reiki to it and build up a nice Reiki 'bubble' to walk into when you go there. Make sure you are as strong and centred as you can be when you arrive - and trust in God/ess! :)

Hi,
it is my belief that reiki only works for good and will always give the healing that is needed and will benefit all.
However, with those who are mentally ill you need to be careful, not so much the reiki but with their expectations, and other problems that may arise of your contact or dealing with them.
Mental health is a huge field and each preson very different. i would suggest that it is a wondreful thing to do..giving healing to those who are mentally ill or suffering from any type of illness or problem.
However, it would be safer for you and any client if you ask the client to get a note from their health vare provider to say they are happy for you to give treatment to them and advise of any problems you may face. I feel it is better in some cases to work under the suprevison and advice of an expert in this field if you have not the confidence or relevant experience.
if you are uncomfortable with doing this it doesn't make you mean..just sensible enough to realise your own limits.
In which case tere are other reiki people out there also qualified in relevant fields of mental health.
Eiter way I am sure you have much to offer and can do a great deal of good,
hal
You are worrying about something that hasn't happened yet
just for today do not worry
perhaps this issue has arisen to guide you to heal your past by sending Reiki back to what you fear, about people with mental health problems, as part of your own journey.
if you are asked to visit/treat these clients you will be guided to do what is right for you and for them and that might mean saying no
best wishes
Dear Reikiangel
I agree with Doq on this one.
I would wish to know each individual's case study and have a discussion with each client first. Firstly from the medical standpoint and secondly from the person themself. So basically I would wish to know exactly what I am dealing with prior to giving any form of healing or self development work.
Mental health covers a multitude of conditions as we know. A secretary that was working in a mental health hospital once read out ten case studies to me, 8/10 of these case studies all had a root cause in loss and grief. Bereavement, redundancy, bankruptcy, relationship breakups and business loss. People like this certainly could be helped by Reiki.
The other problem is that people in mental health are usually on mind altering drugs, which can impact on their healing experiences. There is a book called 'Toxic Psychiatry'. I have met people that have been labelled schizoprehenic and they are not, one ladies only experience was dreams of the same satanic rite, I was convinced that this was past life and a recurring dream. However the US medical profession had her on heavy duty drugs. It is very sad that our mental health system does not currently understand clairvoyance, clairaudience or clairsentience and spiritual awakenings. So sadly those that have genuinely had a spiritual awakening and/or religious experiences can find themselves misunderstood and trapped in a system that does them a great deal of serious harm.
I did meet a true schizophenic once and from my perspective it is easy to tell the difference, he wanted soul retrieval work but I refused to take him into altered state, I gave him Reiki instead and he found it very relaxing.
What these people need more then anything else is tender loving care, true understanding, someone to listen to their plight and all the positivity that you can offer them. Many describe their condition as being in a black hole where they can see no light, and I feel sure you are able to bring a light into their lives that can show them that they can heal in the most wonderful way. When one is mentally ill to be able to see a light at the end of the tunnel gives these people hope. To be able to give people hope of recovery, is an amazing gift to share because they get sick of being sick and doctors that do not listen or understand them.
Recently I have been involved with some extreme cases, the horror stories of what they have encountered with doctors is truly horrific, if anyone should be locked up it is some of these doctors for the abuse they impart and seem to enjoy. I would like to see all sessions between patients and psychiatrists tape recorded to ensure this abuse is stopped. There was a US website called Stop Abuse started by a lawyer but I have not been in touch with her for some time. Apologies I digress......
The MIND charity are a very pro-active group and are using complementary medicine in their branches so it might be good to speak with them about their experiences too.
I also have a dear colleague who is both a Reiki Master and was a NFSH healer for 20 year's before doing Reiki and she works full-time in mental health in a different capacity. I feel sure that she would be very happy to talk to you in-depth on the phone.
Would Reiki make the voices go away ? I do not think so.
I feel sure that you will tread wisely and bring a great deal of love and light into their lives.

Good morning Kim and to all you other wonderful people who have replied. Thank you all for taking the time to write such thoughtful posts.
Taking away my own personal fears I still would feel uncomfortable using Reiki with these clients which is why I was so surprised to hear "yes" coming out of my mouth. I took this as a sign that Reiki wanted to be used in this situation. At the moment this is all academic as the lady mentioned hasn't rung me yet, and may never do for all I know!
I want to help these people and will find a way to use Reiki, ie calm the wards that they are on, send it to the doctors/nurses so they treat their patient's in a more gentle way etc.
I think I mentioned last year that I had a young woman come to me who worked on a secure ward for mental patients and that she felt totally drained after her shifts and often dreaded going into work because the patients would get really unmanageable when it was her shift. She also felt like an outsider with her own workmates because she would not join in with some of the ways they treated the people on this ward. During our sessions I realised that she too was an energy worker but she didn't know it. She was wide open which is why the clients reacted on her shift and why she felt so drained at the end of it. After a few sessions I talked to her about my theory and she was interested in trying the methods of protecting her energy when at work etc. The next time I saw her she was a different person!
She said the next shift she went on she protected herself and she couldn't believe how calm the patients were. Then, with tears in her eyes,, she told me about one man who hadn't said a word the whole time he had been on the ward. He had come and sat next to her and told her his life story!! She said she also had felt calmer and had more energy when she left at the end of her shift.
So, if Reiki helped that lady to help her patients then maybe I can help other staff so their patients can benefit from the effect?
Thank you all again,
Love and light

Yes indeed .... What occured to me on first reading your post is that maybe Reiki wants your involvement here to be working with the staff, rather than directly with the patients, and that this young woman has shown you the way. As in the saying: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you feed him for life". Perhaps that's where your greatest value lies.
Bless you Reikiangel and all that you do.

Reikiangel,
What a wondeful opportunity!
I do Reiki in a psychaitric hospital as well as massage but because it is a private one no one is sectioned, it isn't a locked ward and the most dificult cases they have are severe eating disorders - which I know is a severe mental health problem but it's not such a threatening thing for an outsider to deal with as other problems.
There is an icrease of CAM being used in pyschiatric hospitals. I was at an EFT course last week and there was a psychiatric nurse there as one of the patients on her locked ward was receiving EFT and was beginning to feel for the first time (she was externalising her anger from I want to kill myself to i want to kill the staff, but hey it was a start!). The advantage with dealing with patients in a hospital is that they have somewhere to go if they have a reaction or need further help. One of the saddest moment s of my therapy life was seeing a woman with really bad anorexia completely in denial and knowing that I was the only thing between her and premautre death and not being able to do anything. At least in a hospital when people leave your treatment you know that there is further help for them.
UPDATE on Mental Health 'path'.
It really feels as if the Universe is gently ( or not so gently!) prodding me along this path again! On Saturday my friend and I attended a conference at Regent's Park College in London on the subject of Past Lives and Spirit Attachment. It was so wonderful to be in the presence of such forward thinking Psychologists/Psychiatrists and the talks they gave were so interesting. To hear Roger Woolgar Ph. D ( don't know if any of you know of him but I remember having to read some of his books when taking GCSE Psychology) talking about the person no longer seen as just a 'physical' presence was truly enlightening. To think that men of science backgrounds are finally coming around to the idea that spirit can attach themselves to living people was amazing.
During one of the breaks we approached one of the speakers, Dr Alan Sanderson ( Consultant psychiatrist, past life therapist and Vice chair of the Spirit Release Foundation) and asked him how we could be of any help to the client he had based his talk on. We explained that we were Reiki healers and that our hearts had gone out to his client and what was happening to her. He was so kind and said that he would be more than happy for us to send Reiki to help her make choices that she needed to make ( and he had already been given her permission to accept any offer of help that was given). He then asked if we had an email address and would we like him to send us some of the talk he had given?!! It was a wonderful moment to feel that we were being treated as equals by this professional man and we happily gave him the information.
Now, today I have been at a Carer's Centre as part of Carer's Awareness Week, giving Reiki tasters to carer's of mentally ill relatives, and it has been a wonderful day and I have met so many lovely people.
At the very end I was just about to go when a lady approached me and asked if it was too late to have a taster. I never like to say no so she sat down in the chair and I told her briefly what Reiki was and how it worked on many levels etc. She seemed interested and when I finished the taster she said she had felt a lot of heat around her throat area. I asked her if she had to do a lot of communicating etc, was he a receptionist that had to deal a lot with the public for example. She said " no, I am the Manager of this centre and 5 others in the Essex area". We laughed but I explained how blockages can occur if we don't feel we are being listened to and wasting our breath etc. She fully agreed, thanked me and left the room.
Five minutes later the lady who had organised the day came through and asked me who the contact was at our local Council where I am part of their staff therapy team. I gave the name and asked why and she said " the Manager of Essex Mental Health team has requested it because she is interested in setting up something similar in the Mental Health team"!!!!!!
SO, what do you think about that? Watch this space lol
