Question:
Hi can you help why do some people with power ? promotion remain polite and pleasant and others become power crazed?
I'd love to figure out ?
Ooh, can't answer that.
Someone will know though.

HI Claire - there was another thread on this running a little while ago -
In my e-mailed Thought for Today this morning I got this - Ego of power brings destruction. I can't quite work it out, but I think it means if you wrap up your identity with the power that you have over others, you wreak havoc. It may not be obvious havoc, but more a disturbance of other people's happiness, to satisfy your own needs.
It's a shame isn't it? Still someone has to be in charge! And the running order has to change every now and then. Hope things settle down in your situation,

Hi,
I would say that it comes down to a persons need to be in control of their own life. Nobody wants to feel out of control.
The reasons why some people in power are pleasant and some are control freaks....
-> The pleasant people are happy with themselves and confident that they know what they are talking about in relation to the position they have been put in, so they don't feel threatened by others around them and have no need to try and force people to do things, finding that treating people pleasantly and with understanding is an effective method of getting things done.
-> The control freaks are not confident with their own abilities and have probably moved into the position of power through job progression or through their own insecurity (i.e. feeling they need to have more money and can't do without). Because of their own lack of confidence they feel threatened by other people, fearing that they must defend their position, and do this by trying to control others, attempting to put those they fear in positions where they will no longer be a threat.
That's the way I see it.

That's it exactly, Giles. My husband had a prime example of the 'insecure power' boss last contract... the guy kept sniping at him, calling him up about trivial things, trying to put down any tiny spark of ingenuity... Peter figured it was because his boss was majorly insecure and saw P's experience as a challenge to his position. The ironic thing was that P wasn't even remotely interested in the guy's job and just wanted to do his own job well.
A boss who is frightened of their own power is a very difficult one to work with. My boss goes off on hairy fits every now and then... I figure it's her problem, not mine, and so it ceases to bother me at all.

I can totally relate to your replies - just thought i'd ask, beginning to think it was me!
Why do some people seem to attract them more than others though?
I'd love to figure out ?
