Question:
Does anyone know what those hard bits are that sometimes appear at the side of nails, just under the skin, why do they appear? I've got one poking out next to my thumb nail and it is so sore and it has made the flesh around that area very tender and painful. What should I do, leave it or try and cut it off? Every time I try to move it, it really really hurts.

from your description it sounds like a hang nails - try to leave it alone, as you've discovered it's extremely painful!
Nip it at close as you can - or get someone ele to do it and keep using cuticle oil on it, Cu3:Renu from CND is a great thing to use if you can get your hands on it because it has copper that helps to heal the skin, it also has panthenol and aloe to moisturise.
