Charge By Change
Question:

Hi there,
I have recently done my Master Practitioner Course in NLP and considering changing the way I structure sessions with clients.
Currently I see clients for an hour to an hour and a half and charge by the session.
However for some clients one longer session may be more helpful to move them right through the problem in one go.
Richard Bandler talks about “Charging by Change” and I am interested in finding out the experience of other NLP practitioners in this regard.
How do you work? What works and why?
If you could be kind enough to discuss this with me please email me privately (click on the name to the left) and let me know a way I can contact you and I will be happy to contact you in the strictest confidence to discuss this matter.
I really appreciate your help.
Thank you.

Answers:

Hi Lou,
I give clients the option of paying for the result, with a guaranteed support scheme for peace of mind. So, I calculate how many sessions in my experience it will take, add a few sessions for anything I may have missed in the initial consultation for whatever reason and take a risk on the rest. From the client's point of view, this is good because it means they have a fixed cost and a therapist determined to get them sorted as soon as possible. From my point of view, I am assured of the client's commitment to attend and finish their treatment and therefore succeed, so I am more likely to get good referrals from them.
I sign a contract with the client for this and we each keep a copy. You also need a credit and debit card facility as most people don't walk around with big wads of cash. The best people to talk to about that are your bank.
I didn't always have this scheme; I used to use it only for smoking. Then a client asked for guarantees and I did it for them and thought why not offer it to everybody? After talking to my accountant, I took his advice and went ahead with what has turned out to be a very good charging scheme for any client budget. If you want his details, you can PM me and I'll give you his number and email address.
BTW, I'm not an NLP practitioner, although the same principles apply here.
