Question:
Here's a plea for information and help: this winter I was introduced to the drink called kambucha (or kombucha). In case you've never heard of it, it's made by fermenting a certain kind of mushroom in (I believe) green tea or some other liquid. The resulting drink is absolutely delicious and apparently very good for you.
So two questions:
1. Can anyone tell me just what are the benefits of drinking this stuff.
and 2. Where can I get a mushroom to start making my own (and how do I make it?)
Love and thanks

I've been given something similar called "snow lotus", and I was told to pour milk on it everyday, and it makes yoghurt - a pro-biotic I guess.
If you Google on Kombucha you'll probably find some sources.
Good luck,
Sharonx
Hi Sunanda
If you go to this site, you'll find info on both kombucha and kefir (or "snow lotus" which Sharon has been brewing):
http://www.seedsofhealth.co.uk/resou...kombucha.shtml
Just look in the left side bar for the kefir.
I used to make kombucha ... especially nice made with Earl Grey or Lapsang Suchong ... but I probably stopped because ...
It's not exactly a mushroom, more like a slimey pancake really, but don't let that put you off, it does make a delicious drink, and I think I'll start again. I used to make it in a plastic bucket stood under the (wall mounted) central heating boiler. Some use the airing cupboard. Making kombucha is not difficult at all.
In the process, the original makes layers of "babies", which you peel off and give away to your friends, so they can start making it too. I suspect I probably finished up with more "babies" than I could find homes for, and the "mother" went mouldy [&o]...
Do get back in contact when you return to the UK - who knows, I might have a kombucha baby to give you by then;)
Much love,
"Hol"
Hi Hol
Thanks for the link. You are such a mine of information!
I'm back in the country but the body is suffering at the moment so will pm you soon.

Oh no that's not alcoholic as well is it?
Aren't you a sweetie, offering your Kombucha! What a great HP member you are - it's so nice to be part of this circle.
Hope you get started with it Sunanda: the girl who gave me mine warned me I had to look after it as if it were a pet. I feel very responsible for it and I think I'll have to bring it with me on holiday! (the alternative is to freeze it.....that's the more sensible option......)

Oh dear, it's all coming back to me now....
I remember my auntie used to brew Kombucha tea and, like Holistic had far too many babies than she could manage. Eventually she gave up with it and we didn't hear anything of kombucha for years afterwards. I mentioned it to her recently and asked what she had done with it. A few minutes later she came back with a dried out flat brown 'pancake' in a plastic bag. She told me that the instruction leaflet said to dry it out on a hot radiator and then place it in a plastic bag for storage....and here it was 5 years later!
Hi Sunanda [sm=wave.gif]
and welcome back! I hadn't realised you were "home" already! Won't repeat the greetings on the other thread, but hope you're feeling better now, and look forward to hearing from you soon. No kombucha babies yet, I'm afraid ... I've been too busy in recent days to even think of looking for a "starter" for myself, hence the delay in my reply, and my apologies. [sm=hug.gif]
Hi Sharon

You say it like this is a BAD thing :D Actually, yes, kombucha is slightly alcoholic, but only about 1 or 2%, I think.
Thank you *modest blush*. You wouldn't be after anything now, would you? ;) [sm=hug.gif]I'm not sure putting your "pet" in the freezer is the thing to do, but you might like to have a read of this joke I posted over a year ago:
Re the kefir: :eek:The website I gave above mentions a water version instead of milk, which may be of interest to those who have an intolerance.
Hi Azalia
You posted while I was typing ... it gets worse!!! Poor things [:-][&o] I'd be interested to know the outcome when the "pancake" is reconstituted.
A [sm=hug.gif] for you too since I'm in a good mood today, but the sun is shining, so [sm=dance.gif] with [sm=dogrun.gif]
Laura.
A HH[sm=hug.gif] to you as well, Laura, hope you enjoyed your walk.
I wasn't hinting, honest, I've enough responsibility with my snow lotus and the cat. I loved the parrot joke though.
Alcohol is a BAD thing taken in the quantities which I am trying not to take it in anymore!
