Fibro-Myalgia
Question:

Does anyone have any experience of treating clients with Fibro-Myalgia? If so what advice can you give.

Answers:

Hi Kai
It is like a lot of these conditions painful to have and treat, it does respond well to massage just approach it carefully and increase the pressure slowly and do not expert it to disappear over night.
It is a good idea to keep asking the recipient if they are all right and keep an eye on them as some think it is better to receive lots of discomfort as it will make it better faster, but it does not work that way :-)

Thanks Paul.
My concern has been that it is a condition which is potentially terminally crippling and one which a friend of mine suffers from.
As one of the symptoms is an unbalanced sleep pattern I had been giving gentle massage in the evenings before sleep to aid relaxation and sleep which did help quite considerably. I understand that there is no cure for the condition; merely treatment to slow the onset of permanent disability.
My friend received a professional massage at a local salon and came away complaining of serious pains to the affected shoulder. She now undergoes physio every week and so my question is; would a form of massage; using manipulation and stretches, designed to correct the balance in the body and re-educate the structure be more beneficial if one considers that due to the pain one may re-adjuest there posture to compensate for the pain? I am thinking here of shiatsu, Eyerman Technique and Thai Massage.
Kind regards
Kai

Having read your mail I was wondering if you know of any extablishment that I can visit to learn Myofascial Release?

Answers:

Hi Kai
There is an old saying that if you don't use it you lose it, now this applies to most debilitating conditions, if it is painful to move something then they don't move it and it deteriorates a lot more quickly, mobilisation as you suspect and stretching need to be employed but it needs to be built up slowly to avoid the painful side effects.

Answers:

there a few great books on FMS and CMP. Look on amazon under fibromyalgia and myofascail pain syndrome.
I treat a lot of FMS patients as so often their pain can be helped with fascail release work which deactivates the painful trigger points.
drop me alone if you want more info on trigger points and FMS.
best wishes
