Conversations with Chief Joseph
Beyond the Veil of Death
John Cali
Chief Joseph died September 21, 1904, exactly 100 years ago Tuesday
this week. He was about 64 years old and died in his tipi at the
Colville Reservation in present-day Washington state.
Ever since the end of the Nez Perce War in October 1877, Joseph had
been in bitter exile from his beloved ancestral homeland, the Wallowa
Valley in what is now Oregon. The physician who attended Joseph after
his death said he probably died of a broken heart.
During the 1877 Nez Perce War and until his death, Joseph was one
of the tribe's most prominent leaders. An eloquent speaker and
statesman, he was a strong advocate of Native American rights, the equality of
all people, and deep reverence for our Mother Earth.
Joseph became a legend in his own lifetime, admired and adored by
people of all colors and beliefs.
Over the years people have asked me why the Joseph I channel is not
exactly the same as that historic Nez Perce Joseph. And they ask why
Joseph rarely talks about Native American issues.
Actually, Joseph does talk about Native American issues, but within
the broader context of human issues.
I’ve even had several folks tell me the real Joseph would never
choose to communicate from the world of Spirit through me, a white man.
These people usually have serious spiritual issues. Their attitudes
betray a basic misunderstanding of who we all are, as human beings and as
spirit beings.
When we transition back into the world of Spirit from our human
forms we are not the same as we were in those human forms. That would be
the same as saying we as adults are the same as we were as infants.
Life doesn’t work like that.
We are constantly growing and evolving, whether in human or spirit
form.
Chief Joseph:
Physical death–that experience you all have been through
many, many times–changes you. You are not the same being after you’ve made
a physical transition into the state you call death.
Nor are you the same being when you transition from spirit
form back into the physical through the process you call birth.
As John said, you are all constantly growing, whether you’re
in physical or spirit form.
You will never, ever stop growing. You will all reach a
point, however, when you will no longer choose to come back into a physical
body again.
The end result of all your lives, physical and nonphysical,
is growth. You cannot not grow. It’s impossible for you not to grow.
You are growth-seeking beings, whether you’re in physical
form or not.
Growth is the name of the game of life.
You live eternally. And you grow eternally.
So to expect a particular being–for example, the Chief Joseph
we were once incarnated as–to remain exactly the same being after
"death" is simply missing the whole point. And missing the real truth of
what life (and death) are all about.
Even in your daily physical lives, you do not remain the
same. Even from one moment to the next.
With every breath you take, you become a new and renewed
being. The old you literally dies, and a new you is born.
Even the cells of your physical bodies renew and regenerate
themselves constantly.
Your every breath, your every moment, is a new beginning. Can
you feel the immense power and joy of that?
You are born again, and again, and again . . . forever.
Life is all about growth. You might as well accept that. For,
in that area of your lives, you have no choice.
Of course, you can make a choice not to grow. But that
choice, as with all choices, will only bring you more growth. So growth is
unavoidable.
