Acid heartburn
Question:

I wondered if anybody can help. I am getting acid indigestion/heartburn through the night and it is waking me up. I did all the wrong things first of all like drink cold milk etc. I went into GNC a food supplement shop in town and got some Herbcraft Peppermint formula. It tastes revolting and initially it seems very acidic itself, burning as it travels down the tube into my stomach. However, it does soon settle and last night the heart burn did ease. I wondered has anybody got other suggestions. Am I being fussy about this medecine? My mum always used to say the worse the medicine tastes the better it is for you (the comment was usually made as she thrust cod liver oil down me and I reached!). If anybody has a pleasanter option it would be appreciated. The woman in the shop also said to chew on a piece of chicken before you go to bed??? And warm water was better to take than cold???
Thanks Lexi

The only long term solution would be a change of diet, eating more fresh fruit and vegetables would help to reduce acid. Also supplements rich in chloryphll such as Barley Grass and Wheat Grass have a very alkalising effect on the body.
By continuing to eat foods which increase acidity you will never get to the root of the problem and taking remedies to treat the symptoms will never get rid of the cause. Try reducing the amount of processed foods, dairy produce such as milk, cheese, butter and yoghurts etc and foods high in saturated fat.

I used to get this whilst pregnant, and the things which were suggested to me were to eat early, plenty of time for the food to be digested before bed, to prop up the bed a little at the head end (bit impractical!) and to try Gaviscon of all else fails.
The Homeopathic remedy Nux Vom also worked for me.

I think I am going to take a bit of advice from you both here. I eat a lot of vegetables and a moderate amount of fruit. I have to be careful which fruits I eat. Pineapple or anything citrus is a no. I will consider the barley grass and wheat grass supplements - I think you can get them in the form of supergreens. I eat a variety of cereals - rice, couscous, barley etc and I take kelp currently. I have to follow a low fat/cholestrol diet because I am diabetic. I will cut back on the milk. I thought about your points on pregnancy Karen - but the test said negative. I will try the other formula you recommend, use an extra pillow at night and see what happens

I know this sounds ridiculously simple but if you are getting any reflux sleeping on your left side also helps keep those acids down. If you can be propped up too, that is even better. It really does work.
I use to suffer from terrible heartburn every night and couldn't figure out why. So, I got tested for food sensitivity and the only 2 items that the results said I was sensitive to were Tomatoes (extremely) and oranges (mildly) so I cut them out of my diet and hey presto! the indigestion went. Now whenever I eat tomatoes I get indigestion guaranteed.
Good luck, I hope you find something that helps.

just wanted to say, reflexology can do wonders (in my experience) with reflux.....and should it be able to get under control or stop after a course then your therapist could always show you how to do the appropriate areas yourself so you can self treat...
