Advanced Techniques Sports/Remedial
Question:

A question for you experts out there..
I've got my Diploma in Remedial and Sports Massage - now I could go on and do the Advanced course with the same school - or go to another training centre - but both of these would involve a lot of travelling for about 10-12 weekends over 12 months (we're talking a couple of hundred miles each way) - to be honest I'm not keen on doing that again having just come out of 6 months of it.
Is it possible to gain the same skills by doing a series of short courses i.e. 2-5 days which I can do when I have the time? If so does anyone have any establishments they can recommend. (I don't mind travelling for a short course)
Thanks in advance for any information or opinions or anything! you have to offer.

Hi FB,
Can I just ask which diploma in Remedial and Sports Massage have you got? I'm due to start one of the same name in the next couple of weeks so it would be really cool if I knew of someone who had already done it. The one I'm doing is VTCT which is accredited to the Sports Massage Association.
As for shorter, more intensive courses I can't help you in your area coz I'm down in Kent! Sorry. Maybe somewhere like the LSSM may be able to recommend somewhere...??? Or maybe some of the examination boards... hope you find something - good luck!

Hi BT
I did my Diploma with the Scottish Massage Schools - it was a really good course - but the Advanced is 12 months 12 weekends and the thought of travelling up to Edinburgh for that length of time is daunting at the moment.
Where are you doing your course? I'm a bit confused - I had a look at the SMA site and couldn't see a VTCT course - they all seem to be schools doing their own accredited courses.
Good luck with your course

Hi FB
I'm going to be studying at the Raworth Centre in Dorking which I found listed on the SMA website. Although the websites don't mention VTCT their paperwork does!! They also have have their own internal qualifications.
Luckily it's only about 40 mins drive from where I live so I'm not too worried about the travelling. I can understand you not wanting to do the trip to Edinburgh regularly though... to be honest, it's the travelling time that put me off from studying in London. Trains at weekends are really unreliable.
I'm really looking forward to it but I'm a bit concerned about the part where you need to to clinic work experience and have to observe another practitioner working, such as a physio or osteopath etc. I can't really imagine many of their clients being comfortable with another person sitting in the corner making notes!
I hope you manage to find a course that's right for you - it's addictive this studying lark isn't it??!!!

Hi BT,
I had a look at the Raworth - lucky you!! It looks great - just a teeney weeney bit too far for me though:D:D - having said that though I'm off to Edinburgh on Saturday - another 2 1/4 hour drive[:o]
Anyway, I have a plan (it's always good to have a plan - several actually) & I think I'm pretty sure what I'm going to do.
Good luck with your course

Hiya
Heard good and bad about the SMTO (as with PMAS too)... generally I like Maggie fine.. she has done a tremendous amount of work in the field but there is something to be said in trying another school....esspecially sine you are not in Scotland.. tis a long way to travel.
Eventjough I live in Glasogw and am fully trained, if we ever are, I have never done an SMTO course, been to 2 conferences though, were you there for Hugh Gilberts seminar last year? I assisted him, that was an interesting weekend!!
However, it's either that or travel to The Northern School, I believe they have a good course or go to London.
What about doing John and Zana's (Wester School) advanced workshops.... They used to be SMTO but left to get their own accreditation.... I know that is still travelling to Glasgow but not as a full course just weekends that interest you.

Hi
I think you can hear good and bad about most courses, schools or whatever - that's life. I personally think Maggie is great, she certainly helped me as did all the other tutors, but (and I apologise in advance if I'm going to upset anyone), Scotland is very Scotland focussed - I can understand why - but for me living in the bit between Scotland and the South it can be a little tiring:D.
I'll have a look at the courses you have suggested and thanks everyone for their advice, I can assure you it is greatly appreciated and I love it:D

Sorry for going completely off topic here, but I don't really know what you mean with the above, but it sounds soooooooo good!
I love Scotland and its people and the way they do things here, the way they think, the way they reason, the way they live... If Scotland is very Scotland focussed, I guess it is a good thing then? :)
I'm just a little foreighner living in Scotland and loving it...
Just wanted to get that off my chest so, you can all go on with the topic of this forum and ignore my little pondering... :D
