Low cholesterol diet
Question:

Morning all,
I need a little advice. My wife has been told that her cholesterol is high and needs to take it out of her diet. The GP went through the usual subjects and the only one we can work on is cutting down the red meat. You would not beleive how healthily we eat and how active my wife is.
The GP prescribed some tablets to take daily that should help and will test again in 6 mths.
Are there any tips you can pass on please?
In advance, many thanks.
Russell

Hi Russell
I work in CHD team, cardiac rehab and work with patients on these issues.
My recommendation would be to follow a mainly mediteranean style diet. Eat plenty of fibre to lower cholesterol i.e. fruit, veg, beans and oats ( oats are an excellent tool to help reduce cholesterol). Eat at least 5 a day fruit/veg. Cut out foods high in saturated fats such as biscuits, cakes, hard cheese, butter. Change to mono-unsaturates, olive oil based. Eat oily fish rich in omega 3 twice a week i.e. herring, mackerel, sardines, salmon.
Moderate amounts of alcohol have been proven to have a protective effect but 2 units daily is the max. That glass of wine actually is beneficial, although new evidence shows that any alcohol has the same effect.
You say that your wife is very active. the guidelines are exercise most days at a moderate intensity for at least 30 mins.
The British Heart Foundation have a huge amount of information available in booklets, leaflets and videos about cholesterol which you can accesss online. Also check if there is a local Coronary Support Group near you, they will be able to give you first hand advice.
Hope this helps in som small way
Love and Light
