Question:
I have been jogging and running marathons during the last twenty four years, but never regularly. Maybe my stop-start training routine or the fact that as you get older your muscles become less flexible.
Since I recently got back into regular long distence runs of six or more miles, I have experience much discomfort and stiffness in the lower part of the legs and feet. Even after getting up the next day my legs and feet are still stiff and in these parts I also feel stiff and restricted when I walk.
Are there any exercises or food which can be done or taken to avoid this condition.
Just a thought, but have you got good quality running shoes?
That is, actual running shoes as opposed to trainers? Good shoes make all the difference (I expect you already know this, but sometime the obvious escapes us!)

Hi bmc,
It's very difficult to make comments without actually seeing the problem, but here goes my 2p
You don't say whether you do any regular stretching at all. As you get older (& I'm not going to guess how old!) you do tend to stiffen up. You can get away with so much more when you're younger, because you tend to be more flexible.
I would start to do regular stretching sessions, if you find the actual stretches themselves boring - got to something like a Yoga class.
See if some sports/remedial massage might help in releasing the fascia of the muscle, but if you don't keep it stretched it will creep back.
You're certainly doing better than me _ I can't manage a mile now!
