Case study client who has sensitivity around T1/T2 - what could be the cause?
Question:

I'm in the process of beginning my case studies to complete my ITEC Diploma in Holistic Massage. I have a case study who is presenting quite a lot of sensitivy either side of the spine in the waist region - around the T11/T12 region or possibly where T12 and L1 join.
Other than this she's in great shape. She's studying to be an Iyengar Yoga Teacher and feels that this problem could be caused through incorrect posture during certain yoga poses. She reports that pressure on this region makes her feel "panicky" - so it goes further than just a pure physiological reaction.
As I'm still in the very baby stages of A&P, I'd love some feedback from experienced therapists what muscles attach to these vertebrae and also any suggestions on what techniques might go someway to "loosen" up this region. Currently I'm touching this area mainly when I do static pressures up and down the spine. I have to go REALLY lightly over this area, whereas on the rest of the spine she likes strong pressure.
Thanks! XXXXXX

Hi yogajoga
Try looking up the latissimus dorsi as a starting point and the transverse abdominals as both will give problems in the back and side :-)
