Question:
In Taoism and Tai Chi, a so called superior person is one who attains to learn and practice the 5 excellences.
1- Tai chi
2- Poetry
3- Medicine
4- Painting
5- Music
Interesting... I've got 1, 3, 4 and 5 covered (as in regular practicing thereof).
what does poetry entail? appreciating or writing? just poetry or prose/literature?
I don't know, I am still pretty devoid of 3 of them. I think it just means you should work on them. Cheng Man Ching was considered a master of the 5.
Hmmm - in my book a superior person is one who thinks that she/he is no such thing ;)
But then, I don't do Tai Chi and only just scraped my anatomy exam - and as for painting!... So I would say that, wouldn't I?

I don't believe they mean in the sense of being superior, you know how translations go but more in the way(tao) you lead your life.
Sure, John - forgive my former flippancy, I think I sort of understood what they meant really. It's good to have accomplishments to aspire to, even if they seem rather a long way beyond us, dontcha think?

definitely. i like having goals; even if i don't achieve them, the fun is in trying to!
I think another word for this is Renaissance person.
Erm dont get me wrong thease are good assets to have but this was said in the past, perhaps we need not take them litteraly. Just do what make us happeist and dont aspire to too much. But it would be good to be good at all of thease things though
