A little help with crystals needed!
Question:

I dont know much about crystals but would like to get some to put in my house. Which crystals can you use for protection? And which promote spiritual awareness? Does anyone know of any good shops in the West Midlands of England that sell any?

Hiya Off With The Fairies!.x
Some suggestions which I hope may help you...
The members of this website have put together a list of crystal shops & good references of information on these threads... have a browse...
Alternatively you may want to head for your nearest Town Centre, find the nearest crystal shop & talk to the people behind the counter but most importantly always go with your intuition (it's never wrong!)
A good source of information on the metaphysical properties of the mineral kingdom can be found in a series of books called Love is in the Earth by author Melody. There are six books in this series but the one I would recommend is called 'A Kaleidoscope of Crystals' - It's a big fat dictionary of over 700 crystals & minerals & yummy information.
Maybe a couple of idea's for you to begin with... & as you say you are just beginning, so these crystals should be easy for you to find & distinguish....
First of all you mention protection, but you didnt say on what level.x.. I'd suggest Pyrite
Pyrite posseses a defending quality & is an excellent preventative from many forms of negative energy. By simply carrying a piece of pyrite, you will be provided with a protective shielding which works on physical, emotional & etheric levels.
One more...
Quartz - The clearest you can find. This crystal contains endless properties.
It is said to bring the energy of the stars into the soul. It both harmonises & aligns human energies - Thoughts, Consciousness, Emotions - with the energies of the universe & is recognised as a stone of power.
Finally - Remember to Cleanse & Program (give them a job!) your crystal once purchased.

What kind of protection? - from what exactly - many crystals have a "protective" influence - but if you can be more specific - we here in the electronic aethers may be able to advise.
For spiritual awareness - undoubtedly - Kyanite (the blue variety), meditate with it - and before you do - hold the thought for a while - that it will allow you to perceive higher information about circumstances...
You can get any to put in a house - there are none better and none worse for that... where possible I personally recommend you only buy rough natural stones and not the (more pretty) polished ones...

ps: What part of the West Midlands... I have a list of some 500 shops in the UK.

Errm… I might say that many shops and wholesalers of crystals and minerals do not appreciate the book ‘Love is in the Earth’ by Melody (sorry Naturally Universal...) – because it contains so many varieties of obscure minerals that are either very difficult or impossible to obtain. Crystal shops often delight at customers bringing in lists of stones they want… but sigh when they hear its from this book…
Having been in the trade for 15 years, I have had many conversations with many people about this book (it’s been around a long time) – and many with wholesalers and suppliers – the general opinion are less than favourable…
I also personally do not recommend this particular book due to the writers regular use of the same sentences of quality description repeated throughout the book for umpteen different crystals and minerals… It never ever says ‘why’ a stone has a quality and Melody herself in her other books is clearly putting a commercial edge on her writings. She has her own mines in South America and the one thing that can be said for sure is that she is a good businesswoman! I have heard that she will charge a fee to “bless” crystals bought from her place in the States… there’s nothing like a good ego to boost your sales! She also has a habit of giving different names to crystals or minerals that are already recognised by existing names and worse still – she gives names to certain crystals that SHE has in her own collection – thus such items are impossible to obtain in likeness (such as ‘Buddha Quartz’). She markets a dubious ‘mineral’ under the name ‘Super Seven’ which is allegedly an admixture of seven different existing minerals she says are powerful healers… I, and many others beside me are not convinced.
Reading (and believing) this book is an act of ignorance and I do not recommend it.
That said – Melody has ‘awakened an interest’ in the subject of crystal healing in people all around the world through the million plus copies of this book shes sold; and that is no bad thing.
still controversial…

Dear Sol.x..
With Love & Respect to YOUR path.x.. I do not agree with your opinion that it is the general opinion of many shops & wholesalers of crystals & minerals that they do not appreciate Melody’s books & am saddened to hear that you ‘sigh’ when you hear people are looking for crystals from these books – As of course it may be likely that if we did not have this book, people would not be standing in your shop/warehouse at all.
I am surprised to hear that the opinions of the suppliers & wholesalers you have communicated with are less that favourable, as my perception is the total opposite. I do not retail or wholesale crystals, although I have many friends that do; & having myself just returned from the world biggest Rock & Gem show in Tucson…. in my communication with these people, I find that they Celebrate Melody & her Science Based Research & would definitely not agree that yours is the general opinion.
I don’t agree with your opinion that the variety of over 700 minerals / crystals listed in A Kaleidoscope of Crystals are obscure; I believe that this book is probably The Most Comprehensive book on the subject.
I believe that certain crystals may or may not be available depending on your search & receptiveness, or shall I say serendipity. You will find that the crystals you should be working with will cross your path. I myself have collected over 600 specimens from the use of these books over 10 years of interest.
I also do not agree that the book is repetitive. If like me you believe that we are limited by language & taking into consideration that we are talking on a metaphysical level here… It may be easier to appreciate that the subtleties & properties of Crystalline Energy Flow into one another & therefore I believe that descriptions may also…
You stated that Melody “never says why a stone has a quality”. I personally find that the books do state very clearly these references & updates are put together using; Geological Research / Hands on Experience / Experimentation / Folk Lore / Channelled Information – Validated through further Experimentation. All in a Controlled Environment.
I personally find that hearsay & gossip are not reliable sources of information, but something that can be repeated over & over & over again is. As the basis of any Science Based Claim is that it has to be Reproduced / Repeated, I fail to see why you believe that you are not shown where the information on the qualities / properties came from.
With regards to your reference of the ‘dubious’ crystals. It is a fact that the description of the Super 7 aka the Melody Stone or Sacred 7 has been published since 1996. At this time, there is no defined/accepted mineralogical name for this specific combination of minerals & to my knowledge there is no other published reference to this stone. This stone has been subject to the above tests & there any many specimens of the stone out there… through various sources…
The make-up of a Super 7 is as follows;
Quartz / Smokey Quartz / Amethyst / Rutile / Cocoxonite / Geothite / Lepidocrosite.
I know that there will be thousands of people not just in the UK but throughout the world who use her books & practice her methodologies that would be saddened to hear your insults & gossip towards Melody & her lifes work. I would suggest research into some of your misguided judgements. To be told that anyone who reads or believes in her work must be ‘ignorant’ is abhorrent. Again, with Love & Respect to YOUR path, I find flippant condemnation of people’s beliefs totally unacceptable & a disability. Not part of our evolution toward One Love.x..

[color=#990099]Hi Cindy,
Ok, let’s appreciate each-others positions, this is a forum for the advancement of the subject of crystal healing and it is visited by a potentially large number of people all interested to either post questions or perhaps answer other peoples posts; or add their opinion to current posts. Nobody (including you and I) has the ethical right to say one or another is wrong in their position. However we are all naturally entitled to our own opinions and I stated mine.
I did emphasise in my post reply last week that what I was saying was in my own opinion and I did not intend to cause offence. I did also say that Melody has helped to generate interest in the subject; I am not altogether out to depose her as I agree she did (albeit indirectly) help me attain my position – but this help would be extremely indirect.
However, I do assert that it is a fact – from my experience that there definitely are many shops that sell crystals that do not appreciate the book ‘Love Is In The Earth’ – for the same reasons that I said in the prior post. There is a wholesaler on the South Coast and another in Manchester, and another in Lancashire with whom I have held discussion and they have given me their opinion about ‘Love is in the Earth’. You may not like to hear that if you are a fan of her books.
Alas, I don’t have my copy to hand – it is in another part of the country at the moment, but I am sure I can confirm certain facts with you about the book… If you open your copy and read her opinions for ten or fifteen different minerals – does she list the sentence; “this mineral can balance all chakras on all levels” ? Or did I just imagine that?

Also can you please tell me where, in her books does she actually give the details of the ‘science based research’ you refer to in her healing quality accreditation of the minerals? I never found that. If she lists a certain quality – where does it say why she lists that particular quality for that particular mineral. I might add here that many other writers have followed suit (even some prior to Melody’s books did the same) and happily stated quality after quality without a hint as to why this stone has that quality etc… Therefore my observation here is not just restricted to Melody’s works. It’s easy to say you do this and that research in one paragraph and then go on to write a whole book out of your imagination. I don’t believe she did that – I think that - where she could - she did research of other written works and must have talked to Native American tribal elders but I think she heavily relied on channelled information. My point here is that (in my opinion) her written references to stones – don’t include sufficient cause given to consider the quality of the stone reasonable. It is especially evident with some minerals and (if you know the stone) – you can see she has simply looked at the name, appearance and chemical basis of the stone and then assumed a quality to it… I wish I had my copy here – I would happily quote page and paragraph for this again and again. If you look at the book objectively – this happens throughout the text.

Errm… please show me where Melody’s books list such details of the scientific results… My sister is a genetic scientist teaching in Cambr

Well I as a nearly completely ignorant yet very interested party would like to say I learnt something from Sol, Cindy (and Antari) from this thread. I will think about purchasing the book mentioned, and I will not take it on board without more than a little circumspection. (As with any other matter ).
Thank you,
Sharon

I personally enjoy the books by Katrina Raphaell
Crystal Enlightenment
Crystal Healing
The Crystalline Transmission
When I took my Crystal Healing Therapy Course with the SVA I was told to get the books by Melody. I did, but I agree that most of the crystals are obscure and I can honestly say that I have never really used her books. The photos are quite lovely in them though!
I must admit to using dowsing or intuition in choosing the crystals I use for healing, protection etc. but I have been to Crystal Fairs and seen a lot of people using her books.
