Aromatherapy Hot stones?
Question:

I was just wondering of people use essential oils or just carriers oils when giving a treatment?

Answers:

When I purchased my stones set from Ellisons, they had a special offer on which included a wooden stand and three bottles of pre blended oils - one is plain oil, one is a blend of Harmonising oil, and one a Relaxing blend.
They are very nice oils, and the addition of the fragrance which is intensified by the heat makes the treatment seem even more special!
I have also used just plain almond oil too!

I qualified as an aromatherapist last year and will be doing a hot (& cold) stone course as soon as I can afford to - not that it is an expensive course it is just one of several I want to do
hot stone massage is good with or without essential oils but would be wary of pre blends as they are usually based on almond oil (nut allergies) and have rosemary in them which is contra indicated for high blood pressure

That sounds lovely - which essential oils do you favour or does it depend on the client?

Just thought I would mention that I have just done the Hot Stone course with Gateway Workshops in Battersea in London. I thought it was great. There were only 8 of us and they crammed a lot of information and learning into one day.

Also we were advised by the tutor that when using pre-blended aromatherapy oils with the hot stones to dilute them by 50% as the heat of the stones intensifies everything. She said as long as you dilute them with carrier oils that are already in the blend, instead of adding something else to the mix, it will be fine.

But obviously this is dependent on you also being aware of what oils you are using and if there are any allergies or other contra indications for the oils in the first place.

grizelda I did a Gateway course. Good value for money. we were told it was preferable to use only a carrier oil as other oils can ruin your stones. If you want to use aromatherapy you must dilute. I don't really see why aromatherapy ols are needed for hot stone therapy as the therapy alone is deep, satisfying, detoxing and destresing.

daisychain hi,
I;ve been doing hot stones for a few years and I DON'T use essential oils as I don't want to taint the stones.

Piglet Hi Folks
Well, I use aromatherapy oils a lot of the time with my stones (trained with Jing Advanced Massage in Brighton last yeaar) and have never found them to taint the stones at all. I do put the stones in the dishwasher sometimes without any harm done.
I can only say that I absolutely love using the stones in relaxing and remedial treatments and if I do use essential oils the heat enhances the aroma in the room.
Definitely well worth learning to use stones.
Best wishes
Piglet
