Hi,
It really depends upon what form of Sapphire you are looking for... Do you want it as a gem stone, facetted and set in jewellery - or as 'loose stone' - or as the original natural crystal? I'll assume you mean the latter...
They are not really as expensive as most people would think... I used to sell Blue(ish) Sapphire crystals for 2 - 4 Euros (about £1.50 -£2.25 in UK), however - they were not "stunningly beautiful gemstones"... In the crystal shops of the UK, you'll only come across 'mineral grade' Sapphires. This is because all the 'good stuff' goes into the jewellery market. They will not be especially large either - you could expect to see crystals up to 1cm across and up to 2 - 3cms in length (often a lot smaller). They will be more grey than blue.
As for 'fakes' - well you would be very unlikely to find a 'fake Sapphire crystal' in a UK shop. Yes the synthetic stones are used in the jewellery trade - perhaps as much as 30 - 40% of sapphire jewellery uses man made stones. But nobody would go to the trouble of making a fake crystal to sell it as a crystal - it would be far too expensive to do.
Where to buy.... - The very first place I would look would be the Rock'n'Gem fairs all around the country. You might, if you are lucky, come across a good, clear(ish) blue sapphire crystal as a mineral specimen... but it's not going to be cheap (£25 - 150) or large.
As an alternative, you could take a holiday to the Isle of Mull in Scotland, and with a little research find Sapphires on the S.W beaches... but you'd have to be really enthusiastic!
Good luck
Sol.
