Melissa essential oil
Question:

Can anyone help me out please. I need to catagorise Melissa and all the info I have read says it can be eith top or middle note. Only one source will go for one which is middle but from what I have read I am leaning towards top.
Can I have some other opinions?

Answers:

Hi again
Both of my books suggest Melissa as being a middle note (Wanda Sellar and Julia Lawless). It really depends on its volatility and I suppose one could argue this could be variable depending on the source of your supplier and the growing conditions etc.
Hope this makes sense.

Hi izzig
Although I too have found books that say melissa is a middle note, I would suggest that melissa is a top note as its main chemical constituent is citral a Monoterpenoid aldehyde which from a chemical point of view together with esters suggests a top note. The oil its self is sharp, penetrating and volatile which again are common characterstics of a top note. In the plant top notes are found in flowers, leaves and fruits. Melissa in my opinion wouldn't be suitable to use as a body of a blend as in a middle note as they are usually warm, round, soft and mellow (not like melissa) also middle notes usually form the bulk of a blend between 40-80% (not sure I would like to add this much melissa to any blend).
Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you more

thanks essence
that helps to explain why I felt it was more of a top note. Just starting chemistry side of things now at college so it should make more sense soon. Just hope my tutor agrees.
By the way how do you feel about mandarine as again I feel and have read it as a top note but my tutor has put it as middle?

Answers:

Hi izzig
I would agree with you on this as it contains a high proportion (90%) of Monoterpenes and again these suggest a top note
All the best in your chemistry it's not as bad as everyone imagines and its so useful later on.
