Question:
Chic or Fashionable
Hi everyone - although I've been registered for quite a while now, I have only "lurked", so this is my first post on here. I have just registered on another "beauty board" and have asked the same question, but it seems very quiet there.
My question is: can you look chic and be fashionable at the same time or are the two totally separate?
The reason I ask is that I have just returned from Paris (with work) and because it was my first trip there I made a concerted effort to watch the Parisien women and how they dressed. I have to admit that they all (with a few exceptions) looked very chic, but in an understated, effortless way. Although they were not dressed in the height of fashion, they still seemed fashionable, if that makes sense. Do you think this is simply down to general grooming or do they have a secret that I don't know about. Maybe it was because it was central Paris and not further out that gave me this impression.
By the way, I am quite old (51) but still like to look good and fashionable - although I must admit that I have to leave some of the fashionable items on the rail - don't think the tartan mini is quite me now, although hubby might like it
Thanks for your time and I look forward to your responses.
I think it very much depends on what's in fashion but it's definitely possible, imo. This season's trend for mannish trousers, for example can look very chic with an understated, well-fitted top and simple accessories.
The good thing is these days there are so many trends each season that you are almost guaranteed to find something that suits you and looks chic but is still fashionable.
Being immacutely groomed should certainly help, I imagine.
I think its possible too - the chic part being the 'base' of the outfit and the 'fashionable' part the accessories if that makes sense! I mean like putting on a simple black dress, that would be chic, and adding a dogtooth scarf to make it 'fashionable'.
I dont think high cutting edge fashion can be 'chic' in that way though or maybe I'm confusing chic with sophisticated???

The impression I get is that french women pride themselves on being elegant and chic, rather than fashionable. Brits are more known for being 'quirky' and edgy.
There used to be a French woman at our work, in her 50s, and I have to say her outfits were always great and definitely epitomised the whole chic thing. For example, she would typically wear very well cut suits or skirts and beautiful shoes and bags - the kind of clothes you could wear season after season.
Hi and welcome!
I think they come hand in hand...however, someone can be chic in the most discreet outfit - I find being chic is all about attitude and the right accessories more than the outfit itself...saying that, a chanel tweed suit is always a classic and chic outfit (yet if matched with the wrong accessories however it can be  while matching the right updated/funky accessories it will defo be fashionable! :heyhey: )
I think chic is always fashionable but not so sure something fashionable is always chic, if that makes any sense!
