Question:
Dying clothes - Help needed!
Hello everyone!
I have decided, after buying 2 of these dresses in the Topshop buy one get one free sale, that I would like to dye one of them so that I get more use out of them.
This is the dress
the material is 100% viscose. The inside has a satin feel and look, but the outside of the dress is not.
I was thinking i would like to dye it purple.
I have never dyed clothes or anything before so need all the advice I can get. I need one which I can dye in a bowl of water as mum is anal about the washing machine and won't let me use that to dye it with.
Do I need to use a dye fixative, or is the dye alone and a it of time all I need?
Also to get a red dress to go purple would i buy a blue, or a purple dye or something different altogether?
ta!:D
Forgot to add, aslo what is the best dye to use and where can it be found? Can you tell im completely clueless:lol:
Hi Nursie
I have dyed a few thiings using dylon dyes (you can get them from woolworths or john lewis)
I mainly used the washing machine ones - they are fine to use as you run a cold wash straight after to get rid of any residue. If you use one of these you are supposed to use salt (normal table salt) to fix it but you can also now get a liquid sachet (again dylon) that has this included.
I have also used the cold water dylon dyes to dye a bed spread that was too big for the machine. I did this in the bath! I can remember if you need salt to do it this way but it has all the info on the pack.
One thing though different kinds of materials give different results, cotton is the best as this goes truer to the colour on the packet, viscose would dye but you may find it wont be as dark a result.
Thanks for that! It sounds quite simple! Im not too worried what colour it comes out as long as it is different to the other dress I have the same and is even. I will go to wollies tomorrow and take a look at what they have.
Just to update!
I have done it and it has turned out really well. Bought a royal blue machine dye and it has gone a really nice deep urple! Just as I wanted it so I am really happy. The red stitching didn't dye so there is red stitching around the hem, neckline and sleeves but it looks quite nice! Thanks for your help.
