Question:
Buy Or Make?
Hi Baggers,
I'm in a bit of a situation, my Debs is on September 21st & I'm in pursuit of a really gorgeous dress.
A Debs is short for a Debutante Ball that the majority of Irish schools have after you Graduate & a couple of weeks before you go to Uni.
It's a huge event!
My situation is do I buy a dress or do I get it made?
There are cons to both!
If I find a dress I love someone else could turn up with exactly the same one but if I get my dream dress made it could turn out really crap!
I'm on a bit of a budget too! €300 (around £250)
& most of the most amazing dresses in some shops cost double, even triple.
I've heard from a lot of people that made dresses look horrible & really obviously made up!
I know I have loads of time to think but I genuinely do not know what to do!
The budget is concerning me & the fact that if I buy one someone else might have it but if I get it made then it might look terrible!
Anyone have any suggestions?
Or has anyone ever had a dress made?
Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated!

I know what you mean about made dresses looking a bit crappy sometimes...
If I was you I would buy it and start looking now. Even if you get a dress from somewhere like Coast or Karen Millen, if you get it now its less likely that someone else would have the same dress, as they'd be more likely to be buying dresses closer to the debs.
Also have a look in vintage shops (a friend of mine got a fabulous and totally unique dress in Harlequin in Dublin for her debs) and TK Maxx...
I'm sure there are lots of good sites to try too but I'm not that familiar with them. Hopefully someone else will be able to help :)
Hmmm I remember at my formal it was quite easy to see who had their dresses made. I wouldn't say they were horrible, but there was a quality to them that made it obvious. Personally I would buy one. I mean is it very likely someone will turn up with the same dress? My year was a pretty big one and I don't recall any two girls wearing the same gown :) Unless you can find a really good seamstress via word of mouth (which I'm sure is possible) and can get a look at previous dresses she's made then I would hit the shops!
My first stop would be vintage/charity shops, I have to say, but then I am a charity shop junkie :D Failing that, I'd buy something unless I knew a really good seamstress who I trusted.
I don't know how strict the dress code is, but if you could get away with it, my other thought would be something like a tuxedo with knockout shoes and jewellery. Might be totally off the mark though!

Everyone is telling me to buy one too!
I'm just afraid that someone else will have it though :faint:
There are 150 girls in our year like!!
But you're both right, everyone I asked have said that made dresses can look a bit dodgy!
I was thinking of even buying a plain black dress & getting it altered!
