ideal work-wear capsule wardrobe

really need some help; am starting a new job this week and despite having quite a few good pieces to wear I feel like I am missing the staples (and worse still I'm not sure what these are :confused: )
The dress code at work is smart casual - no jeans.
Please give me some tips on what are the current office trends and what 'staples' I should buy for a workwear capsule wardrobe.
I was thinking in the lines of black trousers - now where on earth do I even get these from as so many styles make me look frumpy (Im 5'5 and a growing size 10-12)

1) well fitting black trousers - you will just have to try on EVERY pair in your local area to get a pair to fit you right!
2) v-neck jumpers - try DP's i think they have coloured ones 2 for £12??
3) vest tops to go under v-neck jumpers (or plain tees?)
4) plain tees - i wear scoop neck ones when its too warm for jumpers
5) shoes to go with above - prob black
I also have a few skirts i wear dependant on the weather - maybe buy the absolute basics and check out what everyone else wears?
I also fancy a pinnafore dress if i can find one which isn't mini!

I'm a similar size to you and wear black trousers a lot for work, I like skinny ones at the moment from TS and Miss Selfridge but have had nice, smarter ones from French Connection too.
