Question:
Italian Designers ban Size Zero models
Article here.
Italian fashion designers have become the first in the world to ban size zero models from the catwalk.
Stylists signed a joint declaration with the Italian government, confirming that all models will have a body mass index of at least 18.
Under the new self regulation code in Italy all models in future shows will be "full bodied, healthy and radiant Mediterranean types".
According to the Daily Mail, Italy's Fashion Council agreed that: "Many women affected by eating disorders had started dieting to attain the figures of catwalk models and covergirls."
Last month iconic fashion designer Giorgio Armani spoke out against excessively thin models, saying "The time has now come for clarity. We all need to work together against anorexia."
I think it's fair enough given their height. Catwalk models are an average of about 5' 11' and size zero is just wrong.
I assume we're talking about American size zero though? (as in UK size 4)
That's great news - Italy is such a stylish place that hopefully other countries will follow suit.
I think that models should be slim, but also have a shape - who wants to see clothes hanging off a boy-like waif?
I also think its a great idea. I simply do not believe that people are naturally a size 4. I know someone who is a size 6, and is just bones. I think models could be toned and ranging from sizes 6-12 (for catwalk).
I think I should make the point that size 4 can be, and is, a healthy size for some people of the petite and bijoux variety and obviously all discussion is about people 5'7" or above :)
