Question:
Moving abroad for a year...what do I pack???
Hey Fashion Ladies
I'm a serial lurker but don't post here an awful lot. Anyway, I'm moving abroad next month to study in France for a year and I'm trying to plan my capsule wardrobe to pack. Its a real nightmare as I usually when I move to uni I fill the car two or three times and take EVERYTHING. This time however, I can only take 60 kg of luggage which will be in one big, one medium and one small suitcase so I'm having to really come up with a capsule wardrobe.
My list of things I think I'd need are:
- 4 pairs of jeans (two for with flats, two for with heels; dark and light in each length)
- cardigans in black, cream, dark blue and pale blue
- couple of wooly jumpers (v neck types)
- big snuggly fleece jumper for just in the house
- about 7 sleeveless/strappy tops in several colours for layering
- 3 or 4 long or 3/4 sleeved tops in different colours
- knee length black linen skirt
- short black cord skirt
- black smart/causal jacket
- cream smart casual cotton jacket
- cream cord jacket smart casual
- black coat
- various scalves (wooly and cotton) in lots of colours
- various necklaces in lots of colours and styles
- various belts in lots of colours
- black suede wedge knee boots
- black leather pointy ankle boots
- black high heeled courty shoes
- flat black shoes
- black trainer rocketdogs
- black sandals
My style is generally student scruffy - usually just jeans and a top although I'm trying to look smarter these days... I figure it'd be good to take lots of plain stuff that I can wear with each other so I can make lots of outfits and then accessorise with nice scalves and necklaces and belts. Its just sooo hard though, I don't want to leave things behind but I know I should cut back and just take a really stylish but limited wardrobe...I just cant though......
So....fashion baggers, I call for your help in making me a list for the perfect French year abroad capsule warbrobe.
Million thanks!

Hi,
Your list sounds great, for autumn. But, depending on where you are going in France, you may need some more warm weather clothes. But I suppose if you are going home at Christmas & Easter you can change stuff over.
I'm in Paris and generally find that it's quite warm in September, and certainly this year it was very hot in May. OTOH it can be freezing Dec - Jan time. Also don't forget an umbrella!
Also be aware that French girls wear skirts much less that we do, and short skirts are still pretty unusual here. Don't feel you can't wear them of course, but you will probably attract a LOT of attention in a mini! I have never dared, and I used to wear them all the time in England.
Have a great year whereever you are going,
PG
60kg is a LOT of clothes  i'm the worst overpacker and even packing everything but the kitchen sink (seriously. books, biiig dictionaries, scales ( :uzzle:  ) ) i've never had more than 42kg of luggage (this isn't for a weekend though  more like the whole summer). you don't need that much more for a year than you do for a month really, barring winter coats and the like which you can probably take back and forth in between if needed.
i'll be away most of this year (in copenhagen) and although i wish i could say that i planned to take x of this and y of that it was really just the usual rushed shove everything in the suitcase routine and weigh it to make sure it's under 32kg so the poor baggage handlers don't have to strain themselves  seriously, it's pretty rare that you see a girl of 10 working as a baggage handler, and if i can carry a suitcase weighing in the mid 30s of kgs surely big burly men can lift them and place them on the carousel? not that it's my personal rant of the day or anything
that's interesting about the skirt thing, no wonder i got so much attention in paris a few years ago then  they weren't even minis though :uzzle: i had a freaky guy come up to me in the touilleries and ask me if he could draw me for his personal collection
bloody hell that's a lot of smilies :o
i would agree with the skirt thing (im on my yr abroad in paris now) and also low cut tops arent worn as much.
I took hardly any clothes with me! I just keep buying more and getting my mum to send me out bits and pieces!
That's weird about the short skirt thing in Paris, it's totally different here in the south. Is it Paris you're going to?
