Question:
*warning slightly gross* false pedicures
you know how you can get false fingernails to make your hands loom acceptable? well I've seen false toenails in boots, and was wondering whether it was advisable to give them a go?
I have a wedding to go to in 3 weeks, and wanted to wear nice strappy heels if the weather is good, unfortunately as I'm a runner I have pretty manky feet - bruised toes and a few missing toenails from where I've tripped recently and broken them off at the nail bed. it will take a good 6 months for them to grow back - so now I have the dilemma - do I paint the tips of my nailless toes with polish and hope no one notices, or do I attach falseies directly to the new/delicate skin where my nails once were, or will that damage the chances of my real nails re-growing properly?:boohoo:

Hmmm. In my professional opinion, I say NO, and that you should have some new toenails sculpted to your toes using either acrylic or gel, by a professional nail tech.
However, finding someone in your area might be tricky.
The problem with those stick on nails is that they damage the nail bed, as they are not fitted properly. The problem you might face is that using the glue they give you might damage the tender area on your toes where there is no nail bed.
The benefits of having them sculpted or even tipped by a professional, is that if you chose a reputable company, they can actually use a medical grade glue. I am trained with a company called Creative, who have a glue called Gelbond, that is medical grade so applied directly to skin will not be a problem.
You could ring around nail salons and ask if they use Creative gelbond, and ask them if they can do toes, if they cant you could ask them if they would be willing to stick on the packet toenails you are thinking of, using the gelbond, and then you could soak them off the day after the wedding.
Or if you really have to, you could stick them on using the glue provided and wear them for ONE NIGHT ONLY and buy some acetone (ask at pharmacy counter) and soak them off the next day. This will take an hour or so but much better than causing any damage.

urgh!!!I definately wouldnt stick them to the tender skin where the nail should be,but mainly cos it makes me feel sick!Could you just wear some peep toes instead that only show the big toenail?
my big toenail is one thats missing!:boohoo:
Hi Juggler
*Apparently* Victoria Beckham swears by false toenails (read it in a magazine once) so I would say why not use them just once?
I have no big toenail on my right foot and never will do due to loads of problems with ingrown toenails and my podiatrist actually recommended false toenails to me! He said that it wouldnt be a problem at all and more people use them than you think. I think problems only start to arise if there is a gap between the natural nail and the falsie because if water/bacteria gets in that gap it can give your nail an infection. He said you can also get some "skin paint" or something from ebay or somewhere that you can put on nailless toes too.
Not tried either idea myself though... but I would say if you do try the false toenails, dont peel/pick them off after the wedding. Its always best to soak them off in acetone (as carlabarbie said) so you dont damage the nail/nail bed. That way it shouldnt stop/affect your natural nails from growing back.
